This week, we watched Thelma (2017). What did you think?
Well, this is easily the longest Myriad Movie Mondays video I've done. I just had so many thoughts about this movie, which I take as evidence that it was doing some interesting stuff!
Thelma draws from a lot of genres including horror, thriller, mystery, romance, and coming-of-age drama. Some even call it a superhero movie but I don't know that I'd go quite that far.
There was a lot I liked about it: the music, the acting performances, the cinematography, the mystery. However, I did have one major issue with it.
I thought that the characterization of Thelma and her relationship with Anja was a bit too ambiguous and weakened the movie overall for me. This contrasts the nuance displayed by Thelma's parents that I thought strengthened the movie.
How about you? Do you like that it's unclear whether Thelma's more heroic or horrifying in the end? Or do you think it is clear? Let me know!
