From experienced comic artist to first-time novelist, Aaron Warner's The Transmogrification of Frankensteam had a strange beginning:
3 Questions for Aaron Warner regarding his newest creation, Frankensteam
1) Known mostly for your comic books, children's book art and comic strip creations, what inspired you to create a novel set in a Steampunk version of 19th Century Victorian England?
Aaron Warner: I created the idea of a steampunk-styled Frankenstein for a comic book/graphic novel I envisioned, but with so many of my projects yet to be completed, time is slipping by faster than I can keep up with all that I've conceived...but I always thought this idea deserved some life. So rather than allow it to get lost in the back of my file cabinet, I talked an incredible writer into bringing Frank to life. We actually developed a 48-page comic script first, and when I read what he could do in script form, I wanted to see what would happen if I nudged him to complete the concept as an actual novel. And fortunately he did! It is an amazing story and the novel allows us to share more details and more drama and more action than we could fit in the comic version.
2) How did you find Andrew J. Scott, the writer behind "The Transmogrification of Frankensteam"?
Andrew actually found me. He emailed me through Cartoon Studios seeking comic book writing work at a time I didn't need a writer. My wife and I run a freelance art business and often create comics for clients, but at that time many of our clients were other writers, so I let him know we just didn't have any writing assignments. A year later, Andrew wrote me again and asked if things had changed, and I like dedication. I'm drawn to that because I don't give up easily, either. So I found work for him. And watching his scripts come in for other projects we were doing, I could see he was extremely talented and needed to sink his writing teeth into something very meaty. I was thrilled when he agreed to write this. Andrew is the perfect fit for a creepy, foggy, monster-mayhem kind of story.
3) For over 30 years, your creative career has traveled a unique course beginning with critically acclaimed newspaper comic strips to political humor, then into serious zombie-Western territory with your live-action photo comic Ghost Canyon. You're also publishing a comic series titled True American Legends (americanlegendcomics.com), featuring stories about famous icons in American history. What's next for Amazing Productions?
A nap. Then, as they say, back to the drawing board. We're just getting started!
