Forty years ago, downtown Nashville looked very different. Businesses were returning to shuttered storefronts, historic buildings were finding new life and a group of residents and merchants formed The District to champion the neighborhoods at the heart of the city.

Today, downtown is a thriving residential, business and entertainment district — and The District is still going strong. This year, supporters celebrated the 40th annual Progressive Party with stops at The Stage, Jelly Roll’s Goodnight Nashville and The Hampton Social, while honoring Michelle Scopel with the Judy Steele Bayer Award for her work revitalizing Second Avenue.

We celebrate this year’s Academy for Women of Achievement honorees at the YWCA’s AWA Honoree Party, head to OZ Arts Nashville for Beyond Bourbon and join the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee for their annual luncheon.

Then, we’re off to the Sexual Assault Center’s Mad Hatter for an imaginative evening supporting the organization’s work in Middle Tennessee.

A major transformation is planned for one of Tennessee's most significant historic sites. The Andrew Jackson Foundation has approved plans for a $132 million investment in Andrew Jackson's Hermitage, reimagining how visitors experience the 1,120-acre property and the history it holds.

The proposed “Held by the Land” concept includes a new visitor and education center, outdoor amphitheater, expanded interpretation, restored historic spaces and a redesigned approach intended to reconnect visitors with the landscape before they ever reach the mansion. The announcement follows the relaunch of “In Their Footsteps,” which explores the lives of the generations of enslaved people who lived and worked at The Hermitage.
