Stained Glass Kids

Stained Glass Kids Stained Glass Kids is a podcast bringing light to our stories as PK’s/ministry kids. Hosted by Yancy. I love Jesus and His Church. StainedGlassKids.com

Hosted by Yancy: Author, Dove Award winning music artist, and chart-topping songwriter. But of all the things she could include in her bio, there is one thing she has been since the day she was born: a pastor’s kid. "Along my journey as a ministry kid, I’ve realized how much isn’t being talked about, both good and bad, and through this series I aim to change that. I want you to know my heart in th

ese conversations. This isn’t me swinging a baseball bat around to be hurtful or destructive. This isn’t about buzz words like Church hurt or deconstruction. I’m not here to drag names and places through the mud. Think of it like a historical home or property. You don’t just take down a wall or make major changes without some critical care and TLC. I want to see the Church capital C thrive. It is a historical treasure, worth celebrating but also worth stewarding, honoring and supporting in the years to come” Yancy shared.

“Faith is better expressed through honest questions than through blind acceptance. There was a 24/7 prayer movement. I read a book about it again and again. It was feeding my soul. I prayed ‘God, I dunno where my faith is right now. I’m kind of angry with you to be honest, but I’m gonna start doing this. I’m gonna show up first thing every morning on my face praying. Either you’re gonna be there or you’re not. And a lot of it in the beginning months was just kind of spewing venom, getting all of this outta my system. It was like a detox thing and it was not pretty. And yet I felt God so clearly going true faith is better expressed through honest questions than through blind acceptance. So much poured out of me from that experience.”

We’ve saved a seat for you, your questions and confessions at our table. Every week new conversations with PK’s and ministry kids that are all grown up. These testimonies make space for pruning, restoration and healing.

In this episode of the Stained Glass Kids Podcast, Yancy talks with Chana Keefer about her life going from a pilot’s daughter to PK. She shares her experience at the end of the Jesus Movement when the hippies got saved and her family hosted Holy Ghost coffee houses. Chana’s conviction and passion for the Lord will rub off on you as you are challenged to be tethered. This honesty-filled conversation is about the power of prayer, an act of kindness, revival and a challenge to bring light to dark places.

“It’s broken people that hurt people. Right. And. It’s those who won’t admit their brokenness, who won’t address their brokenness, that continue to hurt people. Satan loves that, loves it! He loves to hurt from the inside. He’s, and it’s, it’s purely diabolical. He’s roaming around seeking whom he may devour. Inside the church and outside the church. But it hurts most deeply when it comes for those from those you thought had your back.” Chana Keefer, Author Page

“Everybody’s got stuff. Yeah. Everybody’s got trauma and the hardest wounds are often caused by friendly fire in the church. And I, I think we would miss it if we didn’t address that, because as a high schooler, as a young 20 something when people who condemn you as you’re trying very hard to just serve God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. And then there’s this criticism that comes maybe from the people you respect the most. That is a heart wound, that’s a fiery dart that only the devil himself knows how to hit that bullseye. So. Yeah. I had to grapple with that. Have grappled with that. Still grapple with that.” Chana Keefer, Author Page

This statement is one that has stuck with me in the months since. For the most part I didn’t grow up in a context that did much for —maybe there were a few people here and there but definitely not a church wide focus. However since shared this with me , I can’t help but think about Pastor’s and their families. I’ve been pondering it and making plans. How can I give and show my thanks to my Pastors and the ones that Pastor my boys? Today is day one and you have thirty more to figure out something for this month. Whether it be a note of thanks, an email sent or a gift given, I know it will be the very thing that can stir up some endurance for the long haul. Pastors work hard. They love hard and serve so many. Now it’s our turn to give back to them and their families. I’m here for it! Will you join me? ⛪️📝🩷

I was listening to this song and it wasn’t until the refrain that I got stopped in my tracks. I truly started listening to all the words and would say it matches my heart’s prayer for the group of pastor’s kids out there that have ventured out into the far country. The song calls them “The lost kids” and goes on to describe God as bringing us home. This song is on the playlist I’ve curated for you. (Link in bio)

FAR COUNTRY by
Some people need to go find the far country
Some people need to drink from the well
Some people need to touch their scarred bodies
Some people need to get lost to find out

How spacious is the love of God?
No place I’ve been where He is not
From Heaven’s heights to hell below
I’ve found no place, where He won’t go
To bring back the lost kids
To bring us home
He wants the lost kids
To bring us home
Where are the lost kids?
Where did they go?
He wants the lost kids
To bring us home

Well the nights they get dark out there in the far country
When you’re searching for something to give you some peace
Well the pieces I found out there now they just haunt me
I guess some people have to go dark just to see

How spacious is the love of God?
No place I’ve been where He is not
From Heaven’s heights to hell below
I’ve found no place, where He won’t go

To bring back the lost kids
To bring us home
He wants the lost kids
To bring us home
Where are the lost kids?
Where did they go?
He wants the lost kids
To bring us home
To bring us home
Oh, to bring us home

We love how creative and expansive the skills, gifting and creativity of God’s people. Our friend, Dr. Jesse Joyner is an example of how God can use His people to build His Kingdom even one juggling or balancing act at a time.

Episode: 47 The Circus of Calling Vs. Vocation with Dr. Jesse Joyner was full of special moments and wisdom learned along the journey.

Here’s a few of our favorite quotes from Jesse:

1. It felt like the Mom wanted me to be friends with her son because I was the Pastor’s kid.

2. Make the HOME a HAPPY place.

3. I remember reading one line from Peter: to whom would we turn?

4. What does it mean to be called to do something as a Christian?

5. That thing that sets you apart is YOUR superpower!

“That thing that sets you apart is, can be like a superpower and you can harness that superpower for good or for bad, Make sure you harness it for good. Right? Like, I, I would encourage young Jesse to, to harness that unique part of yourself as, as a good superpower. One that brings joy to others. Ones that, one that brings other people together. And don’t use it in a way that’s exploitative, or that’s manipulative or, you know, in, in any way that could bring harm upon others. We all know the superhero stories, so use who you are for good.” -Jesse

In this episode of the Stained Glass Kids Podcast, Yancy talks with Jesse Joyner about his life as a pastor’s kid. It’s not every day you meet someone who has set world records and has serious circus skills but is also a lover of academics and communicating the gospel. “What does it mean to be called, what, what is your definition of calling in your life? Usually what people mean in a, in a Christian environment when they say you’re called to ministry, they’re, they’re talking about pastors and missionaries. But throughout church history, calling has been defined much more broadly than that, including in the Bible. Calling is ultimately our calling to belong to Jesus Christ. It’s our calling to be a son or a daughter of God. Um, that’s what we’re made for. That’s, that’s what our deep heart calling is. But then there’s also kind of like what’s called the secondary calling, the specific calling. And that’s the roles or the positions you know, that God calls us to in life through our work, the work of our hands.” -Jesse

We loved hearing about Jesse’s own journey with faith and the pivotal question from Peter that sealed his faith. “To whom would be turn?” What a powerful question for us all to remember to ask ourselves and keep our eyes on Jesus.

“That was the conclusion I came to in my own heart, it’s good, there’s, no alternative here that’s even close to, or better than what Christ was offering and is offering and has always offered me in terms of following him. That was solidified in my heart. If I walked away from Jesus, my, my anchor, my true north, my compass, it would just, I, my lighthouse there would be none. That’s not a life that looked appealing to me. I know that many people in the world advocate for that. They make their cases for it and arguments for humanism and atheism. But I don’t buy it. I don’t find satisfaction or peace in that path. I find it in the path of Jesus. And that’s where it was solidified.” -Jesse

“My parents were good parents. I don’t know how else to say it. They created a household full of love and care, godliness but not in a legalistic way. They gave us autonomy and decision making skills, work ethic. They played board games with us and music.  It was a loving household they created. Because they created such a loving household for us as kids that meant moving wasn’t as bad for us as it could have been. When we moved, I got to move with the good people that were loving me. I wasn’t extracted from that environment; I got to move with it. If you’re gonna move a lot. Make the home a happy place. A good place. Home can be such a broken place and a terrible place in this world. I don’t take it for granted that my parents raised us in a loving home.” -Jesse

“There was a mom of another boy who was about my age, who I saw trying to convince him to invite me over to their house to play. And I remember watching this unfold and thinking, well, me and that boy, like, we’re not really that close friends. We’re just acquaintances. It felt like the mom was trying to pressure her son to hang out with me because I was the pastor’s kid. She thought that I was gonna be a good influence on her son because I was the pastor’s kid.” -Jesse
