A hike at a Nashville area summer camp turned deadly Monday morning when a falling tree struck and killed a 15 year old boy at YMCA’s Camp Widjiwagan in Antioch.

Metro PD said first responders rushed to the camp on Smith Springs Road around 11:20 a.m. after counselors leading a group hike came across a tree already leaning against another one above the trail.

A counselor warned campers not to touch it, but as the teen walked underneath, another camper reportedly grabbed the tree in a pull-up motion, knocking it loose onto the boy.

Campers and staff lifted the tree off him and he was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he later died. YMCA of Middle Tennessee has sent a support team to the camp and says Metro PD has ruled the death accidental.

Grocery shoppers across Tennessee may want to take a closer look at the price tags on store shelves. A growing number of retailers are switching to electronic shelf labels, and some lawmakers worry the tech could be used to charge different customers different prices for the same item.

The labels are already in place at Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh and Kroger. Walmart joined the trend in March 2026, saying it frees up employees from manually swapping tags.

Tennessee Rep. John Ray Clemmons introduced a bill this year to ban personalized algorithmic pricing, though it has stalled in committee. New Jersey already signed similar protections into law last week.

The FTC found retailers often use personal data, down to a shopper’s browsing habits, to set individualized prices. Meanwhile Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell continues pushing to cut the city’s grocery tax as affordability concerns grow.

A Davidson County judge just ordered the state of Tennessee to take custody of 149 inmates currently packed into Davidson County jails, a win for Metro Nashville after months of legal back and forth.

The order gives the Tennessee Department of Correction and Commissioner Frank Strada 10 days to accept the inmates. The court found TDOC has a legal duty to take custody of certain inmates once sentencing paperwork is filed and a 14 day waiting period passes.

The dispute involves inmates sentenced to more than six years, plus people arrested locally on parole violations from other counties. Metro says those inmates belong with the state, not the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, and that the delay has cost Nashville taxpayers more than 5 million dollars due to overcrowding.

Sheriff Daron Hall called the ruling a step toward safer conditions for staff and inmates alike.
