Off on the final voyage of the season

After floating 843 miles on two Tennessee rivers and recording ten riverboat radio shows alongside thirty-eight wildly talented artists and swimming alongside coal barges and under starry skies and befriending spiders and herons and crickets and carp and anchoring in idyllic coves and cacophonous downtowns and navigating ten river locks and playing a truly embarrassing amount of Mario Kart and binging on fizzy water and hemorrhaging liters of sweat and falling in love with so many new places and people and making things and breaking things and biking in blistering heat for gas and groceries and a glimpse of the elusive Tennessee Recycling Bin and saying the word “dinghy” several thousand times and pretty much exclusively living in our underwear and working and playing and sleeping in the same tiny room every day and night and annoying each other and supporting each other and listening to each other and loving each other more than ever thanks to the above and too many other things to mention—after all of that, we pulled the boat out of the river, drank a few final fingers of whiskey, reminisced about the 2015 trip and daydreamed about the next one, and then headed back to our respective corners of the world, telling each other and anyone else who happened to be listening: thank you, love you, see you on the next river.
