To all my " musicians and studio friends":

Musicians and studio owners make me smile now a days. Always debating what the best mic, board and DAW to use.

In my older days recording, without all the plug ins and options for sound I used many homemade ideas. Everything was on tape and Synthesizers were mostly out of reach.

Don't get me wrong, I love all my modern tools and goodies to pick from, but just having them does mean it's going to do the job.

I've used a cast iron skillet with a spoon to get an effect. Before synthesizers became available, I needed some background wind noise on a on a ocean type jazz recording. I'll give away my secret I used, "drinking straw blown back and forth across a microphone:)"

When I didn't have a kazoo, I would play a comb. Ever tried it? One time I used rubber bands on a curler box, and used the curlers for a bridge under the rubber bands. Try putting different size cupcake beads in a aluminum pop can. Tape it up and you'll have different sounding maracas.

My point is that there's really no right or wrong way to record you music, but use what works, for what you need to create.

Quick stressing over it. Learn from others and keep on keeping on. Equipment sure helps, but you still need to know how to play and produce.

Hello Friends,

Let me share a thought with you about the world of recording studios.

There is a vast difference between recording music at a quality recording studio, and a personal laptop or handheld recording.

The later is fine for writing songs or archiving your music. What I've seen are people buying recording software and a microphone with the intention of creating studio quality recordings.

Even in today's technological advance music world, "serious" bands go to studios to record their craft. I have friends that have their own studios, but go to even higher end studios to record (they have the budget).

Like Ocean Way or Muscle Shoals as example. The bottom line is really about money and the self worth of one's music. You might not know it but even when a group gets signed, the producer usually wants them to re-record their music at another high end studio. Why, because it's a world apart from your cellphone or laptop recording.

If your music or songs are really worth it to you and others, save up some fast food money and invest in a quality recording. You won't know how different it is, until you get started.
