The City has launched its Route 66 Centennial campaign with a new
commemorative logo now displayed on City vehicles. The design celebrates Needles as California’s Gateway to Route 66 and its historic role on America’s Mother Road. This is the first step toward the 2026 Centennial, which will feature community events, beautification projects, and regional tourism promotions. The initiative aligns with Council goals to elevate heritage tourism,
strengthen community identity, and support local businesses ahead of this milestone year.

On October 23, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department hosted a ribbon cutting for the remodeled Colorado River Station in Needles. Sheriff Shannon Dicus and Board Chair Dawn Rowe joined City officials and partners to celebrate the station’s first major upgrade in 35 years. The modernized facility serves as a regional hub for law enforcement across 5,200 square miles—from
Big River to Kelbaker Road—improving operational efficiency and response capabilities. Sheriff Dicus called the station “a true home base for our deputies, ”underscoring the County’s long-term commitment to Needles. The City appreciates this investment in public safety and continued collaboration to keep Needles a safe place to live, work, and visit.

Investigation Continues into the Shooting that Left One Person Deceased and Three Others Wounded in Needles July 23rd

DATE: July 23, 2025

INCIDENT: Homicide / Attempted Murder Investigation

LOCATION: 1900 block of Erin Drive, Needles, CA

SUSPECT(S): Xavier Scott, 20-year-old Resident of Needles

VICTIM(S):
William Garhartt, 52-year-old resident of Needles (Deceased)

Confidential – 21-year-old Female Resident of Needles

Confidential – 22-year-old Female Resident of Needles

SUMMARY: On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at approximately 6:40 a.m., Needles Station deputies responded to the 1900 block of Erin Drive, for a report of shots fired. Deputies arrived and found four people suffering from gunshot wounds. A male inside the apartment, identified as William Garhartt, was pronounced deceased at the scene by San Bernardino County Fire Department personnel. A male and two females were transported to hospitals for treatment.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division-Homicide Detail, responded and assumed the investigation. During the continued investigation, the suspect was identified as Xavier Scott of Needles. Scott has not been located as of this time. Investigators are releasing a photo of Scott to aid in his location and apprehension.
