Hi friends, buckle up for a long post here.
When we first wanted to start this plant box at Slice of Heaven Bakery, we approached Rebecca (the bakery’s owner), she loved the idea and shared that she had been wanting to create a memorial in that very spot for her nephew, Josh.
Josh’s story is the reason you’ll see frogs on the plant box and you may have noticed the “In Loving Memory of Joshua David Holm” on the front door.
Before he got sick, Josh loved origami frogs. When he was in the hospital, his classmates sent him dozens of folded frogs, filling his room with their care. The day of his surgery happened to be Leap Day and everywhere in the hospital, frogs seemed to appear. A mural, gift shop trinkets, nurses in frog scrubs… it was as if the frog had become his symbol. During his battle with a rare liver cancer, Josh adopted the acronym FROG: Fully Rely On God. His family even had bracelets made with that message.
Josh was born on November 22, 1996, and on this day August 19, 2008, he went to Heaven. His family continues to honor his memory through Joshua’s Camp, a retreat for families facing childhood cancer, and through everyday reminders like these frogs that meant so much to him. You can learn more about Joshua’s Camp here: https://www.joshuascamp.org.
Today, on the anniversary of his passing, his mom donated something very special to the plant box. She purchased four “String of Frogs” plants from Josh’s Frogs, one for each member of their family. These aren’t just plants; they carry Josh’s story with them. If you choose to take one home, please know it’s very special.
Caring for String of Frogs
• Beginner Friendly | Non-toxic
• Plant in well-draining soil
• Water when the top of soil is dry (don’t let it stay soggy)
• Prefers bright, indirect light but can adapt to lower light
Thank you to Josh’s mom, Darla, for the donation. Please keep Josh’s family in your hearts. 💕
