A glass of wine with Thanksgiving dinner, some spiked eggnog or a warm glass of spiked apple cider, a bottle of celebratory champagne to bring in the new year; it is not uncommon to enjoy an alcoholic beverage during the holidays. For some people, however, one drink is all it takes to fall into a vicious cycle.
This was the case for Craig Whaley, who fell into addiction after being invited to happy hour and drinking with a friend.
"The only alcohol my parents drank was champagne at their wedding. I joke that maybe I was making up for lost time. I loved the effect alcohol and drugs gave me. I never lost my belief and had not God intervened, I might have hit another rock bottom after the su***de attempt. Addiction is so consuming, and you are desperately trying not to be sick," said Craig.
Craig's road to recovery included rehab and relapse, but ultimately he has been sober for almost 10 years and he has become an advocate in the Joplin recovery community.
