"On the second Thursday of each month, the back room of the Joplin Family YMCA fills with a special kind of energy. Cards shuffle, coins vanish and laughter mixes with gasps of surprise. This is the Joplin Magic Club, where hobbyists and professionals gather to share tricks, sharpen skills and, most importantly, spread joy."

Rob Signs, organizer of the club, said, "our goal is really two-fold: We want to provide a place for people to learn and pursue the art of magic, and we want to serve the community by providing magical entertainment in various venues. Whether you're a beginner or a professional, there's a place for you here."

"In 2012, a curious idea sparked the imagination of an avid cyclist and kayaker: What if a bicycle and a kayak could be one and the same? That simple thought evolved into a remarkable human-powered amphibious vehicle; and eventually into a 4,500 mile, coast-to-coast odyssey that spanned land and water."

Randy Ridings of Carthage, Missouri, created the Quadyak, a one-of-a-kind hybrid of a four-wheeled recumbent bicycle and a kayak and piloted it from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic.

"This craft allowed me to go anywhere: roads, trails, rivers, lakes and even short stretches of salt water. There's a kind of joy in knowing that you can just keep going, no matter the terrain," said Randy.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but for the amazing women who have faced this diagnosis, awareness is a daily reality. Join us as we feature women from our community who have navigated their diagnosis and decided to share their stories.

This week we are featuring Laura Stiles, who received two life-altering phone calls in one week: a call from her boss offering a promotion she had been dreaming of for years and a call from her doctor letting her know she had breast cancer.

"Breast cancer has significantly changed my outlook on life, relationships and even day-to-day tasks," said Laura. "It forced me to spend a considerable amount of time thinking about death and what it would mean to myself and those around me. But I'm reminded that everyone's time is limited."

Seventeen-year-old Zane Browning is in his senior year at Carthage High School.

"Brady Cloud can hold the Jasper County, Missouri, Courthouse in the palm of his hand. He has recreated schools that were torn down decades ago, hotels that collapsed before he was born and buildings people walk past every day without knowing their stories. Using 3D modeling software and hours of research, Brady turns landmarks into detailed models, bringing buildings to life. The Carthage, Missouri, native and junior at Pittsburg State University is already becoming both a designer and a historian for his community."

Tilton & Sons Housemoving Inc. is a fourth-generation family-owned company which specializes in relocating things that are substantial in size, including everything from someone's house to a variety of business properties.

"The one that probably has the most historical sentiment is the George Washington Carver School House located in Neosho, Missouri. We lifted that up so they could have a new foundation put under it," said Derrick Tilton.

Pennington Wines of Carthage, Missouri, is partnering in an ongoing project with the University of Missouri's Southwest Research Center near Mt. Vernon, Missouri comparing traditional farming methods with high-tech tools to see how each affects the vines.

"This partnership goes beyond taste. Missouri growers face unpredictable weather, which can swing from heavy rain to drought within the same season. Irrigation is expensive, and small vineyards in particular need to know whether they're wasting water or using it wisely."

"For many, fall often doesn't start until the local festivals get underway in the Four-State Area. Sure, the air may be crisp, some leaves may turn, but nothing says it's autumn like the Maple Leaf Festival in Carthage, Missouri. Over the years, many people have attended and/or marched in the parade, and many have enjoyed the pancakes at the Carthage Fire Department's Annual Maple Leaf Pancake Feed."

The tradition of the pancake feed started in the mid-1980s. The money raised from the feed is used to purchase supplies for the following year and what's left is used to serve the community when they are in need.

The pancake feed will take place from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 18 at 401 W. Chestnut Ave. Adults are $8 per plate and children 5 years and younger eat for free.

"The fog is lifting, and the sun is almost up as the hangar doors open at Baugh Flight Park near Reeds, Missouri, which is about 20 minutes southeast of Carthage. It's 6:30 a.m. and a picture-perfect time for a powered parachute (PPC) to take flight."

With nearly 30 years of operation, Baugh Flight Park focuses on training students and offering rides to people who are interested in flying. If you are considering flight lessons, make sure you have an aircraft and be prepared to work hard.

"You'll need to receive and log at least 10 hours of flight training with a certified flight instructor (CFI), and two hours of solo flight. You'll need study materials or take a ground course, pass a written exam with your local Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) testing center, and take a 'check ride' with a designated pilot examiner (DPE). It's a rigorous process but one that helps ensure safety and confidence when a solo pilot takes to the sky," said Caleb Baugh.
