🎉 30th Anniversary 🎉
In 1995, Eric Sammut won First Prize at the Leigh Howard Stevens International Marimba Competition in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Held August 8–12, 1995, this prestigious event—organized by legendary marimbist Leigh Howard Stevens—brought together emerging marimba talents from around the world.

Sammut’s unforgettable performance of his original piece Four Rotations For Marimba in the finals became a defining moment that helped launch his international career. Known for his lyrical and expressive style, he has since become a key figure in modern marimba music as a performer, composer, and educator. His works continue to inspire and challenge marimbists globally.

Now, nearly 30 years later, this milestone stands as a turning point that shaped a remarkable musical journey—one that continues to resonate across the marimba community today.

🎶The inaugural work of “The Jonathan Singer Historical Xylophone Publication Series”, Singer transcribes a 1920’s recording of Billy Gladstone playing this medley with the Capitol Theatre Orchestra and arranges it for solo xylophone with marimba band accompaniment.

About The Jonathan Singer Historical Xylophone Publication Series:

With the aim of honoring the legacies of the many, great xylophonists of the twentieth century, xylophonist and scholar Jonathan Singer has curated The Jonathan Singer Historical Xylophone Publication Series. Transcribed from studio recordings and live radio broadcasts, and arranged for both the solo xylophonist and modern percussion ensemble, these pieces both expand today’s xylophone solo repertoire, and give insight into improvisational styles performed from the interwar period of the early twentieth century.

A striking visual and musical experience where four performers build a “cage” with evolving stick choreography—drawing inspiration from John Cage’s Third Construction and the classic tune The Girl in the Gilded Cage.

Commissioned for the Northwestern Doctoral Percussion Quartet’s European tour, this piece is as bold today as it was at its debut in Germany and at London’s RhythmSticks Festival.

Suite for Marimba – Alfred Fissinger
One of the first major works written for solo marimba, Suite for Marimba (1950) by Alfred Fissinger is a groundbreaking composition — the first polyphonic piece for unaccompanied marimba. Structured in four movements, each reflects a moment from Fissinger’s service as an infantryman in World War II, capturing emotions like reflection, tension, fear, and peace. The piece blends traditional (tertian) harmonies with modern quartal and quintal harmonies to powerful effect.
