Suite for Marimba – Alfred Fissinger
One of the first major works written for solo marimba, Suite for Marimba (1950) by Alfred Fissinger is a groundbreaking composition — the first polyphonic piece for unaccompanied marimba. Structured in four movements, each reflects a moment from Fissinger’s service as an infantryman in World War II, capturing emotions like reflection, tension, fear, and peace. The piece blends traditional (tertian) harmonies with modern quartal and quintal harmonies to powerful effect.

🎶Recorded by Leigh Howard Stevens. WAV file available. Includes Stevens’ performance notes.

🎶✨ "Watermelon Whispers" – A Slice of Ragtime Magic! ✨🍉

Diving into the sweet, syncopated world of George Hamilton Green with my arrangement of "Watermelon Whispers" (1918)! 🎼 This playful rag was originally written for piano, but I’ve woven in nuances from Green’s own xylophone performance on an Edison cylinder—bringing a vintage sparkle to this classic.

As a marimbist, Yurika Kimura has specialized in the contemporary repertoire created by Japanese composers, as well as all the compositions by her renowned teacher Keiko Abe. Her xylophone work has concentrated on the ragtime and jazz repertoire of early 20th century America, an era to which she has dedicated a great deal of research.

Ever taken a drive that’s equal parts peaceful and wild? Parkway by jazz vibraphonist/composer Joe Locke captures exactly that—a programmatic duet for marimba and vibraphone that mirrors the thrill and tranquility of cruising down New Jersey’s iconic Garden State Parkway 🌳🚗💨.

Locke even spices it up with tuned gongs and crotales, adding Escape X’s signature percussive flair.

"Driving along the tree-lined roads of the Parkway with a cloudless, blue sky on the horizon can be blissful, but New Jersey’s fast drivers can often make the drive somewhat less than calm."
