Carved into a basalt slope in the Volcanic Tablelands near Bishop, California, these petroglyphs are part of the Chalfant Valley rock art—believed to have been created by the ancestors of the Paiute-Shoshone people over a thousand years ago. This site lies within the Great Basin and is among the most extensive collections of ancient petroglyphs in North America, dating from 1000 BCE to 1300 CE.

Spirals, grids, humanoid figures, and celestial motifs are etched into the desert varnish, their grooves glowing a soft ochre against the dark volcanic rock. Wind, sun, and rain have polished the stone and weathered the carvings into a harmony of texture and tone. Scholars debate their meanings—some suggest maps, stories, or shamanic visions—while others see a calendar of stars and seasons.

There’s a quiet paradox here—this tapestry of symbols frozen in stone, yet alive with motion and mystery. In the stillness of the desert, it feels as though the Earth remembers. And by sitting beside it, we are momentarily written into its ancient language of line and light.
