On This Day in 1982, George Thorogood’s Bad to the Bone Debuted on the Billboard 200

On August 28, 1982, George Thorogood and the Destroyers’ Bad to the Bone entered the US Billboard 200 at No. 127, beginning a lengthy chart run for the album that would become synonymous with Thorogood’s hard-driving blues-rock sound.

The record marked the band’s move to EMI America and featured Thorogood on vocals and guitar alongside Billy Blough, Jeff Simon and saxophonist Hank Carter. Rolling Stones associate Ian Stewart also contributed piano and keyboards, adding his unmistakable touch to several tracks.

Alongside the immortal title track, the album included “Nobody But Me,” “Back to Wentzville,” “Blue Highway,” “No Particular Place to Go” and “New Boogie Chillun,” combining Thorogood originals with the blues and rock ’n’ roll material that had always fueled the Destroyers.

Bad to the Bone eventually climbed to No. 43 on the Billboard 200 and earned Gold certification in the United States. Its title song would grow far beyond its original chart performance, becoming George Thorogood’s signature recording and one of the most instantly recognizable blues-rock tracks of its era.
