New Baltimore Conservancy The New Baltimore Conservancy is a not-for-profit organization; all membership dues or other donations are tax deductible. It is an all-volunteer organization.

The New Baltimore Conservancy is dedicated to conserving and enhancing the natural, cultural and historic resources in and around New Baltimore NY. Activities and projects of the Conservancy include:

- Maintaining three parcels of land of natural and historic value: the Hannacroix Creek Preserve (HCR), the Hudson River Interpretive Trail (HRIT), and Scenic Hudson's Long View Park. These parcels,

owned by the Open Space Institute, the Town of New Baltimore, and Scenic Hudson respectively, include river and creek beds and banks, a tidal pool, wetlands, upland wooded areas, historic foundations, and structures. The Conservancy builds and maintains trails, bridges, and walkways that provide walking access to the lands from a parking area on State Route 144 near the Albany County line.
- Provides informational resources about the flora, fauna, and structures on the land, including occasional nature, walks led by qualified naturalists or historians. Monitors the presence in the river and creek of species at risk, including eels and herring. These activities involve students from local schools whenever possible. Conducts the roadside clean-up of the length of Route 144 through New Baltimore as well as the bank of the Hudson River through the HRIT. This activity takes place primarily in the spring in conjunction with the celebration of Earth Day.
- Sponsors tours of historic homes and gardens, both in the hamlet and in the hills in the western part of the town.
- Celebrates the Hudson River with an annual party in Cornell Park in the heart of the hamlet as well as kayak/canoe excursions.
- Sponsors concerts that highlight local talent in historic and natural settings.
- Offers educational programs that complement its mission and goals. Topics range from birds, wildflowers, and other flora/ and fauna to historic buildings and/or events.
- Sponsors a variety of social events to bring the people of the town and surrounding area together to celebrate people, events, or places.
- Honors a local student with a scholarship each spring. Dues are $15 per individual, $10 for students, and $25 per family per calendar year. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30, generally in the community room of the Cornell Hook and Ladder Co on the corner of New Baltimore Ave and Gill Rd. In the warm months, meetings may be replaced by trail work so it is best to consult the calendar or contact one of the officers. All are welcome to attend.

Great information to distinguish a tom from a hen turkey 🦃

Can you tell the difference between a male turkey (tom) and a female turkey (hen)?

Toms are tall, dark, and handsome! They are about 2.5 feet tall and weigh up to 25 pounds. They display red, white, and blue skin on their heads during the breeding season (springtime). They also grow a long beard of hair-like feathers on their chests, and spurs on their legs that can be anywhere from 0.5 inches to 1.5 inches long.

Hens, on the other hand, are smaller, weighing up to 12 pounds. They have a rusty-brown body, a blue-gray head, and typically do not grow a beard or spurs.

Although it might be easy to remember that toms have beards and spurs, it’s important not to completely rule out that hens can also have beards and spurs. Less than 10 percent of the female turkey population have a beard, and less than 1 percent have spurs.

Be on the lookout for some feathered friends this winter.

The latest Winter Finch Forecast is in and it's calling for an irruptive winter!

Irruptions, or events where large numbers of birds venture out of their typical range, often occur when resources are scarce as a result of climactic and weather events. This year is gearing up to be pretty irruptive—it seems that boreal birds like Pine Siskins and Evening Grosbeaks are finding their favorite foods in short supply in their native range. That’s good news for birders, who may see some favorite species visiting their neighborhoods and feeders in numbers not seen since a “superflight” five years ago.

🍁 **Conservation Tips for an Eco-Friendly Autumn** 🌎

As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, fall is the perfect season to be mindful of how we care for the environment. Here are a few simple ways to *conserve and protect nature* this autumn:

🍂 **Leave the Leaves** – Fallen leaves provide natural mulch and shelter for pollinators and small wildlife. Skip the gas-powered leaf blower and let nature do the work!
💧 **Save Water** – Cooler weather means less watering—turn off sprinklers and collect rainwater for indoor plants.
🔥 **Think Before You Burn** – Avoid burning leaves and yard debris, which can pollute the air. Compost instead to enrich your garden soil.
🌻 **Plant for the Pollinators** – Late-blooming native plants like asters and goldenrod offer vital food sources before winter.
🕯️ **Conserve Energy** – As days grow shorter, switch to LED bulbs, lower the thermostat a bit, and cozy up with a blanket.

Every small action adds up to a big impact for our shared environment. Let’s celebrate the beauty of fall by giving back to nature. 🍃💚
