New Baltimore Conservancy

New Baltimore Conservancy The New Baltimore Conservancy is a not-for-profit organization; all membership dues or other donations are tax deductible. It is an all-volunteer organization.

The New Baltimore Conservancy is dedicated to conserving and enhancing the natural, cultural and historic resources in and around New Baltimore NY. Activities and projects of the Conservancy include:

- Maintaining three parcels of land of natural and historic value: the Hannacroix Creek Preserve (HCR), the Hudson River Interpretive Trail (HRIT), and Scenic Hudson's Long View Park. These parcels,

owned by the Open Space Institute, the Town of New Baltimore, and Scenic Hudson respectively, include river and creek beds and banks, a tidal pool, wetlands, upland wooded areas, historic foundations, and structures. The Conservancy builds and maintains trails, bridges, and walkways that provide walking access to the lands from a parking area on State Route 144 near the Albany County line.
- Provides informational resources about the flora, fauna, and structures on the land, including occasional nature, walks led by qualified naturalists or historians. Monitors the presence in the river and creek of species at risk, including eels and herring. These activities involve students from local schools whenever possible. Conducts the roadside clean-up of the length of Route 144 through New Baltimore as well as the bank of the Hudson River through the HRIT. This activity takes place primarily in the spring in conjunction with the celebration of Earth Day.
- Sponsors tours of historic homes and gardens, both in the hamlet and in the hills in the western part of the town.
- Celebrates the Hudson River with an annual party in Cornell Park in the heart of the hamlet as well as kayak/canoe excursions.
- Sponsors concerts that highlight local talent in historic and natural settings.
- Offers educational programs that complement its mission and goals. Topics range from birds, wildflowers, and other flora/ and fauna to historic buildings and/or events.
- Sponsors a variety of social events to bring the people of the town and surrounding area together to celebrate people, events, or places.
- Honors a local student with a scholarship each spring. Dues are $15 per individual, $10 for students, and $25 per family per calendar year. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30, generally in the community room of the Cornell Hook and Ladder Co on the corner of New Baltimore Ave and Gill Rd. In the warm months, meetings may be replaced by trail work so it is best to consult the calendar or contact one of the officers. All are welcome to attend.

Got algae in your pond or lake? It’s giving harmful. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) that is. HABs are an overgrowth of algae that can produce toxins that can be harmful to the health of humans and pets.

Remember pets and livestock should avoid contact with harmful algal blooms; they can get sick. If exposed, rinse with clean water. Colors can include shades of green, blue-green, yellow, brown or red.

If you suspect there might be HABs in your area, keep yourself safe by always remembering to “Know It, Avoid It, Report It.” Please report any HAB here: https://on.ny.gov/HABs.

🌟 Happy National Lighthouse Day!

🌟 Lighthouses aren’t just coastal icons—they’ve played a vital role along the Hudson River, including right here near New Baltimore.

🌟 Just a short distance south of town, the Athens Lighthouse has stood proudly in the middle of the river since 1874, guiding ships safely through a once-bustling stretch of river trade.

🌟 Back when New Baltimore was a key stop for shipping and commerce, river traffic was constant—and lighthouses like the one in Athens were essential to navigating the narrow, winding channels.

🌟 Today, the Athens Lighthouse is a beautiful reminder of our town’s deep connection to the river and its rich maritime past. Take a moment to appreciate this local landmark and the stories it still tells.

Have you seen wild turkeys in New York State this August? Citizen scientists have already begun recording their observations of turkey from across New York State over the past week. The DEC values your contribution of data which can help biologists assess trends in turkey populations in New York.

➡️ If you observe any wild turkey in New York during August, the DEC encourages you to log those data in the annual Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey, found here: https://arcg.is/1HePbv0

🦃 Turkey Fact: Wild turkey hens will occasionally lay eggs in other hens’ nests.

🪻Thistle Season in New Baltimore 🪻

These purple blooms are popping up all over right now—pretty to look at, but wild thistle can be a real nuisance if left alone. It spreads fast and those spines are no joke!

If you spot them along the trails or in your yard:
✅ Enjoy the view
❌ Don’t let them spread
🧤 If you're removing them, wear gloves and get the roots

Let’s keep New Baltimore beautiful—and just a little less spiky.
