During the month of September, the 84th Lights for Peace flag flying at the Fort Taber–Fort Rodman Military Museum honors the memory of Lieutenant Colonel Joseph F. Napoli of Marion, a United States Army veteran who dedicated more than 23 years of service to his country.

Drafted into the Army during the Korean War, LTC Napoli went on to serve around the world, including assignments in Germany, Italy, Korea, and Vietnam, retiring in 1976 with numerous military honors, including the Bronze Star Medal. Following his military career, he continued a life of service as a Junior ROTC instructor at New Bedford High School, where he mentored generations of students, and later devoted more than 20 years to preserving local military history through the Fort Taber–Fort Rodman Historical Association and Military Museum. According to his family, he will be remembered for his strength of character, compassion, and unwavering commitment to his family, community, and fellow veterans.
