The Rhode Island Day of Portugal Committee hosted a “Toast to America” on July 6, 2025 held at Don Luis Filipe Portuguese Beneficial Association in Bristol, Rhode Island, to celebrate Independence Day, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

M.J. Martins and Providence Portuguese Consul Eduardo Ramos raised a celebratory cup of Madeira wine along with the attendees.

Among the attendees were U.S. Congressman Gabe Amo, State Senators Walter Felag and Linda Ujifusa, Bristol Town Council President Nathan T. Calouro and town councilman and retired Town of Little Compton administrator Antonio Teixeira. Also in attendance were Don Luis Filipe’s President Carlos Medeiros and his wife Sonya Medeiros, Secretary Susie Dickinson, Treasurer Mark Kelsey and Conductor William Sousa Grapentine. Among the business leaders was Tony Avila and Ildeberto Medina and spouse.

M.J. reminded all of the historically acknowledged ceremonial significance of Madeira wine to the founding fathers and the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

“Most of the Founding Fathers were Madeira enthusiasts -- Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, John Jay, among others. Madeira was also the ceremonial wine at George Washington's farewell reception at Fraunces Tavern and at his Inaugural in Philadelphia. MJ alluded to anecdotal health reasons, among others, prompting President George Washington to consume such daily quantity of Madeira.

John Hancock was a major Boston shipping merchant and Madeira wine importer and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, who at the time of the signing, he was the President of the Continental Congress and subsequently became its longest-serving president.

Don Luis Filipe Portuguese Beneficial Association, founded in 1892, is one of the oldest Portuguese associations in America and located in the Town of Bristol, Rhode Island, which has held America’s oldest and continuous Fourth of July Celebration since 1785.
