Spinner’s newest book, “Shipwreck! Horseneck Point Lifesaving Station & South Coast Rescuers” was “walked” yesterday by the ’s Walking Book Tour. Due to the wind, we mostly stood in one of the main stars of the book, the Mass. Humane Society. No. 69 lifesaving station, as well as the adjacent visitor center, at Horseneck Point in Westport. We were so lucky that Gay Gillespie, wife of Charles Gillespie, the architect who championed the resurrection and rebuild of the lifesaving station, was in attendance, as well as the author of the book and dear friend of Charles “Chip” Gillespie, Charles McGrath. On the opening page of the book, Chip acknowledges that Gay came up with the idea of the book, “organized the funding, arranged for publication, and kept the author focused.” This sort of love and energy was clearly palpable, making the Tour, as they say, one for the books that we won’t soon forget.
We were also so very lucky to have Eddie Dillon in the house to close us out with three sea shanties. This was so fun, powerful, and even haunting, as we both sang along and also learned just how these songs were used by the sailors during their work on the boats.
Thank you to all who turned out!
