Today is Edward Hopper's birthday!

Born in 1882, Hopper began his career as an illustrator but eventually achieved recognition for his work as a painter. He made frequent trips to sketch in Massachusetts and Maine. Monhegan Island, off the southeast coast of Maine, is named for the Algonquian word meaning "out-to-sea island." Fishing was its most important industry, but its pristine and dramatic landscape enticed artists as early as the 1850s. Hopper was fascinated by the 150-foot high, north side cliffs at Blackhead and spent his summers, from 1916 to 1919, on the island.
