Here’s a fun one!

This heifer calf was born on February 10th. We were very curious what it was going to look like.

When it comes to color, this momma cow is the odd one out in our herd, but she makes a great commercial cow. She is easy fleshing, has great maternal instincts, has an awesome disposition and has had entirely unassisted births. She is a black angus/charolais cross.

That makes this calf:
• 1/2 red angus
• 1/4 black angus
• 1/4 charolais

She had a birthweight of 81 lbs.

The twin heifers are doing awesome! Being cute and growing, growing!
We had them locked in a corral with their momma for the first few weeks to make sure they were good and bonded with momma, and with the hope of giving her a chance to get used to looking for two babies. We let them out of the corral this past week and in with the drop bunch (the group of cows that are still calving). They have been doing great. The next step is how well they’ll do once they are put in with the other pairs.

Bull calf #3 is currently in the bathtub. Drying off, warming up, and getting a bit of colostrum in his belly to get him going before we take him back to his anxiously awaiting momma.

This picture has all the feels for me…

- The life that God gave;
- The bond God designed;
- The joy that God entrusted these animals to us;
-The rich auburn of the morning light shining on red coats;
- Calf suckling;
- Momma lovingly licking her baby;

All seems right in the world when I get to share in these small moments. 🤎

The first few moments of new life. The push and pull of a momma’s rough tongue. The wonder of that built-in instinct to get up so quickly and find milk. The wobbly legs of a calf’s first day. Oh the joys of God’s marvelous creation!

In our last post, I put up a picture of five cows that were getting ready to calve. Good news!

They all proceeded to calve within six days, AND two of them were carrying twins!!!

Three of the four twins survived. (We lost a freemartin.*) It’s always tough to lose anybody, but we still feel blessed to have three healthy calves out of these two cows.

*”A freemartin is a sterile female calf, born as a twin to a male calf, whose reproductive system is underdeveloped due to exposure to male hormones in the womb from a shared placenta and blood supply.”

We are getting excited! This crew is getting ready to drop some beautiful, red babies!
