Delaware Memorial Bridge Accident Update 1:00 p.m. (Saturday, July 12) – Recovery personnel arrived on-site this morning at approximately 6:00 a.m. Water and tide conditions delayed the recovery effort, which actively began at approximately 9:00 a.m. Emergency recovery resources and personnel, including a crane and barge repositioned from the active construction site of the Bridge Ship Collision Protection project, coordinated efforts to successfully recover both the Bobtail tractor and a deceased male occupant from the Delaware River at approximately 11:10 a.m. Delaware State Police Marine dive unit and Holloway Terrace Fire Company were instrumental in this morning’s successful recovery operation. Emergency personnel used a Hurst tool to extricate the body from the cab and Delaware Medical Examiner has taken possession of the remains.

The investigation of this accident – including the identification of the victim, cause of the accident, ownership of the truck cab, and other accident-related details – is ongoing at this time.

A tractor-trailer cab veered off the Delaware Memorial Bridge early this morning, plunging into the Delaware River in a harrowing crash that triggered a major emergency response and snarled commuter traffic throughout the region.

Authorities say the crash occurred around 3:40 a.m., when a bobtail truck—a tractor-trailer cab without an attached trailer—was traveling southbound into Delaware on I-295. According to preliminary reports, the vehicle suddenly crossed three lanes of traffic, smashed through the concrete barrier on the right side of the bridge, and disappeared into the river near the Delaware anchorage.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and officials have not yet confirmed how many people were inside the cab.

The incident launched a massive multi-agency search effort, including dive teams from Delaware and New Jersey, the U.S. Coast Guard, marine units, and local fire and rescue personnel. Search boats and helicopters were dispatched to comb the water near the crash site throughout the morning.

As of mid-day Friday, neither the driver nor the vehicle had been recovered, and authorities have not released any information about the cause of the crash.
