The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is reporting a release via the Delaware Environmental Release Notification System.

On November 27, 2025 at 2:00 PM there was a release involving 1000.00 pounds of BUTANE into the air from Delaware City Refinery at 4550 Wrangle Hill Rd in New Castle.

This chemical or substance is considered to be hazardous by the EPA.

This incident is currently under investigation by DNREC.

Public Safety Impact

According to federal and state hazard guidelines, butane is a flammable gas that disperses quickly outdoors. The primary concern from a release of this type is the risk of fire or explosion near the source. Butane is not considered a long-term toxic air pollutant, and it does not typically pose lasting health risks to nearby communities.

For most outdoor incidents, the gas dissipates before reaching surrounding neighborhoods. DNREC is reviewing this release to determine whether the butane remained within refinery property and whether any additional precautions were required.
