Leftfield musician and notable producer Jonathan Schenke invites you into the surreal and immersive world of sound on ‘Passages’, his debut solo album, out June 2025 on No Gold. As a producer and mix engineer, Jonathan Schenke has worked on hundreds of records (for the likes of Parquet Courts, Liars, Dougie Poole, and many more). As a musician, he has released dozens of records with his various groups (including P.E., Eaters, and Gift Horse). ‘Passages’, however, is the first solo outing from this prolific collaborator.
“I like to keep busy,” Schenke says. “If I’m not actively working with someone or in the middle of another project, I’ll often plug in some gear or sit at the piano and ‘doodle’. Sometimes it results in an idea that I’ll bring to another project, sometimes it just ends up in the scrap heap, but I found myself making a number of ambient-adjacent tracks in this way. That dovetailed nicely with an immersion into sampling, and as the pile of ambient ideas grew, I decided to explore my electro-acoustic interests to tie things together.“
‘Passages’ draws deeply from Schenke’s previous musical endeavors, as well as his background in classical & jazz recording and sound design. Synthesizers share space with piano, strings, voice, and wind instruments - some performed live, others resampled. The resulting album is its own sonic realm, blurring the lines between electronic and acoustic, composition and collage, and definition and abstraction. ‘Passages’ is out in June via No Gold.
