In Maryland County - Representative . Mike Jurry of Harper District has announced a donation of $4,000 to the Alumni Association of Tubman University, aimed at replacing traditional chalkboards with whiteboards in classrooms across the institution.
The announcement came during the TU Alumni Association’s “Bridging the Gap” program, held on September 30, 2025 at the university’s main campus.
Hon. Jurry, himself a graduate of Tubman College and William V. S.Tubman University, said the contribution was in direct response to an appeal from the Students’ Government Association, which had requested the replacement of chalkboards to improve classroom conditions and learning.
“Despite being a lawmaker for the district, I am also a product of this university and cannot stand aside without identifying with the university family,” Hon. Jurry said.
He added " Thou there are other things they have requested like the fully air conditionered classrooms, additional classrooms etc, but we will address them one at a time".
Students welcomed the gesture, with Dell Johnson President of the Tubman University Students Government Association, TUSGA, speaking on their behalf, describing the donation as “a big relief.” She noted that the move would benefit both students and faculty members, who “are the direct victims of chalk dust.”
For him, Anthony C. Kwarbo, president of the TU/TC Alumni Association, vowed that the funds would be used for their intended purpose.
“This money is huge and significant, and we will work closely with the university’s procurement department to ensure the best processes are followed in acquiring the whiteboards,” he said.
The donation marks one of the latest efforts by TU alumni and student government leadership to address longstanding concerns about classroom facilities at Tubman University.
