Harsh*ta Nair, 21, and Mahial Sran, 20, were two college students from Fremont, California, with bright futures ahead of them.

On June 10, they visited the Santa Cruz coastline near Panther Beach and Bonny Doon Beach, a place known for its beauty — but also for its hidden dangers.

Authorities believe the two friends were resting near a coastal rock passage called the “keyhole” when the tide rose quickly and powerful waves swept them into the ocean.

Rescue crews rushed into dangerous surf to save them. Harsh*ta died shortly after being pulled from the water, while Mahial later passed away at the hospital.

Now, two families are grieving daughters, classmates, and friends who never got the chance to finish the futures they were building.

What looked like a peaceful beach moment became a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly the ocean can turn deadly.
