On Friday night in Waco, Auburn’s 38–24 win over Baylor had its share of big plays—but the biggest story wasn’t on the highlight reel. It belonged to kicker Alex McPherson.
Two days after turning 22, McPherson scored eight points for the Tigers, going five-for-five on extra points and drilling a field goal. Solid numbers for any kicker. But for Alex, it was the exclamation mark on a comeback few thought possible.
In 2024, he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. By July, his weight had dropped to just 110 pounds. That December, doctors removed his colon. For most, it would have meant the end of a football career. For Alex, it became another challenge to fight through. After months of rehab, setbacks, and even more complications this past summer, he fought his way back to the field.
On Friday night, at 155 pounds, with his wife Hannah cheering in the stands, Alex wasn’t just kicking for Auburn’s scoreboard—he was kicking against every doubt, every setback, every doctor’s warning. He was proof that resilience beats adversity, that faith and grit matter as much as strength and size.
In a sport dominated by giants, the smallest man on the field stood the tallest.

This week brought glimmers of good news: Branson’s appetite is returning, his weight is climbing, and his doctors are encouraged. But hardship remains—gallstones cause painful abdominal episodes, and ahead lies total body irradiation and chemotherapy to clear the way for his mother’s marrow donation. Nichole asks for prayers as she completes her own donor testing, hopeful everything stays on track.

That Coke and that smile remind everyone what this fight is about: joy in the middle of pain, hope in the face of fear, and the resilience of a boy who refuses to stop smiling.
