Meet Stan Larkin, a remarkable 25-year-old who defied the odds by living for 555 days without a human heart! Instead, he relied on a revolutionary device called the SynCardia Freedom Total Artificial Heart, which he carried in a backpack. This incredible technology allowed him to lead a normal life, even playing pickup basketball while hauling the 13.5-pound artificial heart around the court!
After a nine-year wait, Stan finally received the heart transplant he so desperately needed. And now, he's thrilled to have completed his recovery, as reported by Tech Times.
Stan's journey began when he was just 16 years old, playing basketball near his home in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Suddenly, he collapsed on the court, and doctors diagnosed him with a life-threatening condition called arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD). This condition causes irregular heartbeats and puts athletes like Stan at risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
To manage his condition, doctors implanted a defibrillator in Stan's chest. This small device uses electric charges to regulate abnormal heartbeats, but it meant Stan had to avoid strenuous activities like pickup basketball. Despite these challenges, Stan persevered, and his determination paid off when he finally received his new heart.
