Going to a concert and listening to a great symphony/philharmonic orchestra - (the terms are synonymous)— is one of the greatest joys of life. The two monikers basically refer to a large orchestra with four main Sections: Strings, Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion.

This instrumental division into four instrumental groups is equally shared today by Dance Bands, Jazz, Latin, and Broadway show orchestras too!

The Division works something like this: 1. Highest pitched instruments (Sopranos); 2. Second Highest (Altos); Middle Range instruments (Tenors); and the lowest range (Bass).

One of my favorite experiences as I listen to pieces I’ve never heard before is try to recognize which instrument is playing the melodic lines that reverberates all throughout the Concert Hall. If it’s a high pitched instrument then I scout for the woodwinds — not a piccolo or flute; then I look to the Brass. . . and so on!
