Personality Profile // Coach Derek Landry
“We wanted to bring that game back. It’s good for the city. I believe in preaching positivity. There is plenty of talent around the city for Catholic High, Westgate and us to all be successful. We’re not in competition.”
🏈
Derek Landry is back in familiar territory, taking the reins as head coach of the New Iberia Senior High Yellow Jackets, a challenge he couldn’t resist after years of success across South Louisiana. Known for long nights, early mornings, and building programs from the ground up, Landry brings the same tireless work ethic that helped turn Westgate into a state champion in 2021. He’s already growing the NISH roster, instilling confidence in players, and mentoring a young coaching staff while drawing on lessons from his time at Ascension Episcopal, Lafayette Christian, and Westgate. With strong community support and a defense he believes can anchor the team, Landry is committed to laying a foundation for long-term success in District 3-5A—and he’s in it for the long haul.

Po-Boy Paradise
🍤
In the heart of Acadiana, Southern heritage celebrates with the po-boy, a humble yet iconic sandwich born during the 1929 New Orleans streetcar strike. Today, the Lafayette Po-Boy Trail leads food lovers through more than 60 stops, from Olde Tyme Grocery’s classic roast beef to Pop’s Poboys’ bold creations like red bean falafel and gravy-smothered fries. Along the way, each restaurant tells its own story—whether it’s a family legacy at Poor Boy’s Riverside Inn, Cajun twists at BJ’s, or global flavors like Pho Home’s Vietnamese po-boy. More than just a meal, the po-boy is a bite of culture, history, and innovation—an edible tradition that continues to unite and delight.

The Hilliard Art Museum’s exhibit “Picasso and the Progressive Proof” offers a rare look at Pablo Picasso’s linocuts, showcasing his innovative printmaking techniques from the final years of his life. Best known as a painter, Picasso also revolutionized linocut printing by using a single block to layer colors and create complex designs, many of which are featured in this exhibit. Curated by Townsend Art Advisory, the collection explores recurring themes in his work—mythology, bullfighting, classical influences, and his relationships with women—while giving insight into his technical mastery. Complementing the exhibit are a lecture series and an upcoming workshop that deepen the audience’s understanding of his creative process and artistic legacy.

Mahjong Mania // 🎲
“Our generation watched our parents play card games like Bridge. We wanted something that felt like that, but without the intimidation. Mahjong makes you think, but not too much. You get better the more you play, but you can still enjoy it on night one.”

Mahjong has become one of Lafayette’s most buzzworthy social activities, thanks to Kristen Gary and Rebecca Autin, the duo behind Hub City Mahj, a growing Mahjong instruction business that’s sparked a city-wide movement. What began as a shared hobby has evolved into a thriving side hustle, introducing over 360 students to American Mahjong and creating dozens of self-sustaining playing groups across generations. With a balance of fun, strategy, and social connection, their lessons—held in homes, businesses, and public spaces—offer more than just gameplay; they foster lasting community. Certified through Oh My Mahjong, Gary and Autin’s approachability, flair, and passion have made Mahjong not just a trend but a meaningful way for people to connect, unplug, and play.

Personality Profile // Tyrone Marcell 🎻
“It’s the truest form of musical expression to me. In improv, I get to express my feelings spontaneously. There’s nothing like a good violin freestyle to beat writer’s block.”

Tyrone Wilkins Jr., also known as Tyrone Marcell, fell in love with the violin in eighth grade and taught himself to play by ear, eventually studying music media at UL Lafayette and releasing his first EP from his dorm room. His career took off after a last-minute wedding gig led to a call from Orchestra Noir, with whom he’s now toured internationally since 2023. A versatile producer, Marcell blends classical training with improvisation, performing original music and arranging for artists across genres while elevating events with his signature sound. He dreams of composing for film and television and hopes to win a Grammy one day.

Toast of the Town // Brain Freeze
🍹
When the summer heat settles in across South Louisiana, there’s nothing quite like a frozen drink to take the edge off. While we’ll always love a classic drive-thru daiquiri, these cool concoctions come from local spots where you can sip alongside a great meal—or grab one to go. From bold flavor combos to refreshing twists on the classics, these frozen cocktails are as creative as they are cooling. Here’s where to chill out in style this summer.
