Toast of the Town // Brain Freeze
🍹
When the summer heat settles in across South Louisiana, there’s nothing quite like a frozen drink to take the edge off. While we’ll always love a classic drive-thru daiquiri, these cool concoctions come from local spots where you can sip alongside a great meal—or grab one to go. From bold flavor combos to refreshing twists on the classics, these frozen cocktails are as creative as they are cooling. Here’s where to chill out in style this summer.

Open Mic Night // 🎤
“It doesn’t matter if it’s a little open mic or a longer feature set, I still get nervous.”
Comedian Lester Hebert says the key to open mic success is showing up consistently, writing your own material, and learning from both wins and bombs. He advises first-timers to practice out loud, time their sets, and never run the light. Watching the crowd before your turn can help you adjust your set, and nerves are totally normal—just find your own pre-show ritual. Most importantly, respect the space, support other performers, and treat every mic as a chance to get better.

Greaux Like a Local

🌱 Want to make a real difference for the planet—right in your own backyard? The Acadiana Native Plant Project is helping locals “greaux native” by growing and sharing plants that support pollinators, restore habitats, and reconnect us to Louisiana’s natural roots. From their Arnaudville greenhouse to “Yard to Habitat” workshops, they’re educating, planting, and transforming landscapes one garden at a time. As ANPP’s Heather Warner-Finley says, “We’re not just about pretty flowers—we’re about purpose.” 💚

Personality Profile // Valerie Woerner
“God has changed my heart from being ambitious and a perfectionist to being comfortable with a slower pace.”

🙏 In a noisy world, Valerie Woerner found clarity through prayer—and turned that into a decade-long mission with Val Marie Paper, helping thousands strengthen their spiritual lives through beautifully designed prayer journals. What began as a personal tool to manage anxiety during pregnancy blossomed into a thriving business, with nearly 100,000 journals sold and six books published. After stepping back in 2023, she passed the torch to focus on homeschooling, supporting her pastor husband, and writing her heartfelt Substack, Asking Questions. “I’m not holding it all together anymore,” she says. “I’m walking with God—one step at a time.” ✨

Women Making a Difference // Reecie Gilmore
🌟🌟
After losing her two-year-old son Clinton to drowning in 2008, Reecie Gilmore turned her grief into purpose by founding RescYOU Group, a nonprofit that supports families grieving the loss of children ages 1–18. Based in Acadiana, the organization provides counseling, sibling support, and funeral assistance, reaching over 2,000 families since 2021. Gilmore’s mission is to help parents find a place where grief and joy can coexist. “It’s not time that heals,” she says, “it’s what we do with our time.”
