Martindale Chevrolet and Hebrew Delight Gourmet Coffee will offer free coffee to New Madrid teachers and school staff on Aug. 20 as a gesture of appreciation for their dedication.

“I thought it was mostly for kids, for their imagination and their creativity. That’s why I started it,” Shelley Mainord said. “But I was really surprised to see how many adults have really got into it, too.”

A community art project in New Madrid, Missouri, has residents of all ages adding painted rocks to "Rocky the rock snake," a vibrant, 200-foot-long display winding along the Mississippi River walkway.

“We got what we felt like were really competitive bids from four very reputable companies. Everybody’s bid came in fairly close to each other,” said City Manager Aaron Griffin, noting the bid of $2,912,300 by the Dexter firm was the lowest of the four.

C.A. Walker Construction was awarded a $2.9 million contract to build New Madrid’s new city hall, with construction expected to begin soon and completion planned to include modern facilities.

The open houses for Central Middle School and High School are from 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12. Lilbourn, Matthews and New Madrid Elementary Schools will host their open houses from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14.

New Madrid County R-1 schools require online registration before Aug. 18, with open houses scheduled for Aug. 12 and 14. Updates include stricter device and water bottle policies for students.

“We are really going to start cracking down and enforcing our ordinances dealing with derelict cars and property,” said New Madrid Mayor Nick White. “The officers will have the ability to write tickets.”
