How does a new cop answer the question of self-identity? Am I an unstoppable, unfeeling justice machine, unaffected by the death and tragedy around me? Am I martyr for the cause, doomed to sacrifice everything good in life so that others can be happy without me? Am I just cog in the machine, utterly replaceable and unimportant? All of these answers and more are floating around police culture and a new cop needs to figure out if there’s a better answer.

Perfection

We work in a profession where perfection is often the expectation.

When you look at high-level athletes, or even military units, more time is spent on training and recovery cycles than on missions or “game” cycles.

Unfortunately, staffing in the law enforcement realm often dictates that training takes a backseat. This has to change.

We need to set and enforce baseline standards that aren’t based on the Lowest Common Denominator (LCD), but on realistic job expectations. We must then provide the time necessary to train and upkeep those standards.

Part of being a professional means you may have to dedicate some of your own time and funds to exceeding these standards. Frankly, a good teammate should take personal offense to being the LCD or finishing last in anything they do.

Be Above The Standard
