The concept is straightforward but the ex*****on is anything but — New Orleans music is all kinds of music, and we love all kinds of music. So when we started working on this, everyone's tastes and influences and abilities pushed and pulled these songs into all kinds of places. Funk, power-pop, jazz, New Orleans R&B, fast songs became slow songs, slow songs became fast songs, no idea was off limits. We had so much fun making this album, and we hope you all have as much fun listening to it!

#62 Leave My Kitten Alone out now!
Is this it? The great Beatles missed opportunity? How can something THIS GOOD have been NOT GOOD ENOUGH to add to Beatles For Sale? Pulled out of the bag when they lads were looking for oldies but goodies to fill out their fourth album, it features arguably one of John's greatest rock vocal performances, and the band is $hIt hot. The common take is how this got shelved whereas "Mr. Moonlight" didn't, but I'd argue this is better than any other cover on the album, and maybe more enjoyable than the originals on it as well. That this song sat in the archives until the 90s is just wild to me. So we better unpack this one. Happy Global Beatles Day!! It’s weird when I think how incredibly different my life would be if I hadn’t become a full fledged Beatles nerd as a child…my taste in music, pursuit of music in any capacity, my perspective on life, my friendships, partnerships, so much of everything I’ve found myself to be in life traces back to the Beatles. So even though every day is Beatles Day for me, I’m happy to join in today’s Global Beatles Day June 25th celebrations and express my continuing love of that band, and spreading their message that’s more important and vital than ever, all you need is love.

#63 - Bad Boy

When the suits in America came asking the Beatles for some market exclusive songs, they reached back into the bag o' tricks, in particular their (John's) affection for Larry Williams, and knocked out a particularly racuous cover of "Bad Boy." It's one of those covers that smokes the original, and it's lead by John, doing his full-throated, rip-out-yer-larynx vocal. This is one of those tracks that could've been a career-maker for a lesser band, and that it lost out on an album spot to Dizzy Miss Lizzy is maybe the main reason it's not as well known or well loved.
