Louisiana’s energy industry has long been our state’s strongest economic engine. Now, it’s being targeted by a growing wave of lawsuits that risk driving investment and jobs elsewhere.

In a recent guest column, James K. Glassman lays out how these cases threaten Louisiana’s business climate, discourage private-sector growth, and send the wrong message to companies considering long-term investment in our state.

With the U.S. Supreme Court set to weigh in on whether these lawsuits belong in federal court, the stakes extend far beyond one parish or one verdict.

Coastal lawsuits aren’t just legal technicalities. The stakes are substantial.

The issue is not about coastal restoration. It’s whether local courts can be used to reshape national energy policy through one-off verdicts.

When lawsuits carry nationwide consequences, they belong in federal court, where the full economic and national impact can be considered.

For Patrice Aaron, Louisiana energy is about people, purpose, and opportunity.

Born and raised near the Baton Rouge complex, Patrice built her career on education, hard work, and collaboration. After six years teaching high school math in East Baton Rouge Parish, she brought her skills to ExxonMobil, where she has spent more than 23 years helping ensure safe, reliable, and competitive operations.

Working in energy allowed Patrice to provide for her family while contributing to products that power communities every day. Her story shows how Louisiana energy careers create stability, growth, and long-term opportunity right here at home.

When lawsuits are used to set national policy, the stakes go far beyond one parish or one state.

This Supreme Court case exposes how trial lawyers are threatening energy jobs and undermining America’s energy security one courtroom at a time.

Cases with nationwide consequences belong in federal court. Anything less puts investment, affordability, and our energy future at risk.
