During yesterday’s, June 7, 10 a.m., Gospel Jazz Mass at St. Augustine Church in New Orleans, voices rang out in praise, worship and thanks as the parish gathered together in their church for the first time in five years since Hurricane Ida devastated the property. Father Emmanuel Mulenga, pastor, thanked everyone for all their hard work making this day a reality, and recognized Archbishop-emeritus Gregory Aymond for his continued support over the past five years. The Clarion Herald's Kim Roberts sat down with renown Catholic priest, podcaster and author Father Mike Schmitz before his May 18 “Parables” stop at New Orleans’s Saenger Theater. Because of the nature of the show and the Q&A session at the end, he described the evening as a unique, one-of-a kind experience in an intimate setting that is always fresh and new each night. New Orleans is the 15th stop on the 19 city “Parables” tour and was added after Father Schmitz visited the city earlier this year. He began his 90-minute tour in 2025 grounded in Scripture, speaking to sold-out crowds.

Today at 8:30 a.m., Holy Name of Jesus School (HNJ) in New Orleans gave the original Mercy Academy Mary statue a new home atop their soon to be completed Little Gator early childhood center entrance.

The 7,200 pound, approximately 6 -foot-tall statue commissioned in Rome, was donated to Mercy Academy by the M.O. Miller family in the late 1950s in gratitude to the Sisters of Mercy for educating their children, especially their daughter Diane who had special learning needs and attended Holy Name of Jesus and Mercy Academy.

Members of the Miller family (including fourth generation HNJ student Javier Lewis who is in pre-K 3) were in attendance for the prayer service and blessing led by Father Eddie Gros SJ, dedication led by HNJ Principal Kirsch Williams and the Ave Maria sung by 550 HNJ students as the statue was raised by a crane and set in place.

St. Matthew the Apostle School in River Ridge welcomed Archbishop James Checchio today to celebrate their recognition as an Apple Distinguished School for the 2025-2028 program term. Schools are invited to apply for this distinction based on their commitment to continuous innovation in education and using Apple products to inspire, imagine and impact teaching and learning. St. Matthew has the prestigious honor of being the only school in the archdiocese and the entire region to attain this level of achievement.
The Archbishop took a tour around the school and learned first hand how the students utilize creativity, technology and hands-on learning in all of their subjects.
He also blessed the St . Carlo Acutis Innovation and Design Lab that was created and designed by a group of teachers with seventh grade students working on it as their project for the year.
