We’re throwing it all the way back to our first Facebook post back in 2016. Did you know this account was originally just for our film “Back Story,” IWES' first feature length documentary? After the Trayvon Martin verdict we decided to create Back Story to change the distorted perception of young Black men in America, and do so through a compassionate lens. We created a documentary following five Black men (ages 15-19) from varying backgrounds in the Greater New Orleans area over six months. Tracing their early experiences to their future goals and aspirations, Back Story was created to show the true experiences of Black males through their own eyes. You can learn more and view the film at www.mosaic-iwes.com/back-story.

Since the days of just Back Story, we also had a page for our first narrative feature film, Woke (https://www.mosaic-iwes.com/woke), then we combined it all to create Mosaic, our hub for EVERYTHING FILM & MEDIA at IWES. We're taking this trip down memory lane right now because after six great years of sharing projects like this one, media resources, behind the scenes moments, sneak peeks and trailers of new projects, and more, we’ve decided to stop posting on Facebook and only post on our Mosaic Instagram account (instagram.com/mosaic.iwes). So make sure you're following us on IG so you can keep up with our announcements, film opportunities, fellowships, funds, and MORE! And if Facebook's your thing, no problem, we still have our "Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies" page (www.facebook.com/IWES.NOLA) for all of the new things happening here at IWES. Thank you for following along here & we hope to see you there!

Calling all filmmakers! Submissions are now open for Chromatic Black's 2nd annual Ida B. Wells Disrupting the Master Narrative Fund. Five applicants will be selected to receive investments of $15,000 each to go towards the production of an original new short film running between 9 and 18 minutes.

The Fund honors the legacy of Ida B. Wells, a trailblazing American investigative journalist who not only chronicled the horrific violence of lynching against African-Americans in the 19th and 20th centuries but debunked the narratives that fueled the violence.

Applications are due SATURDAY, AUGUST 27, 2022 at 11:59 pm EST. Learn more and apply at https://bit.ly/3OfyQkJ

On Saturday, June 11th, IWES participated in Prospect New Orleans’s first-ever Young Artist Exchange (YAE) at the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans. YAE brought together artists, creatives, designers, and makers ages 16-21 for a day of art-making, mentorship, and professional development. Outside of IWES, other facilitators at the event included Teen Art Salon and a team of New Orleans-based, practicing contemporary artists who served as artist mentors. IWES was brought in to explore the intersections between art and mental health, so our Collective for Healthy Communities staff members Mary, Daisy, and Jemila led a Healing Is the Revolution workshop on art, mental health, and healing. Through drawing, painting, and movement, artists creatively explored the prompt: “What does healing mean to you?” Together, they engaged in mindfulness, reflected on the meaning of healing, and received resources and information about mental health support available to young people in the New Orleans community. Check out some highlights from the day here.
