Atitlan Women Weavers

Downstairs from Mayan Kitchen Cooking is a cooperative where local women can sell products that they weave at home. They literally have everything you can imagine, napkins, tablecloths and runners, clothing, aprons, bags, toys, passport covers, and more!

The lady tending to the store even asked if we would like to see a demonstration on the processes of working the cotton and weaving. It was really interesting. And this is just my opinion it looks very hard and uncomfortable.

Mayan Kitchen Cooking Class

I have known of this place and their beautiful story for many years. Finally having the chance to travel to Guatemala and cross Lake Atitlan to participate in a cooking class here is a dream opportunity.

We booked in advance on WhatsApp and the instructions were to meet at the San Pedro La Laguna boat dock at 9:00 am. So there we were. Chef Anita arrived along with a class of about 15. She gave us the run down of how the day would go and had us vote on menu items before setting out to the town mercado in the back of a pick up truck.

She walked us through the outdoor market explaining she does not have favorites, she just buys what is best and spreads her shopping between lots of vendors. We sampled a fresh blue tortilla with salt and got everything we would need for cooking.

Once back at her kitchen I felt very at home. We all got aprons on and her helpers started washing all of the produce. Then it was time to chop, dice and mince. She gave us clear instructions and kept us moving.

Before we knew it there was a full spread of treats for snack time. That included
🔵Female cacao pod
🔵7 types of mangos
🔵pumpkin seed dip
🔵piña
🔵orange
🔵pacaya
🔵guacamole
🔵radish salad
🔵chips

Next we got into stewing, mixing, filling, molding, frying and before we knew it again our feast was ready.

We had a delicious bowl of chicken pepian (the national dish of Guatemala), served with Guatemalan rice, and tortitas de papa. For dessert both bunuelos rapidos and rellenitos made from plantain and filled with chocolate.

Everything was amazing, especially hearing the stories of Anita’s life and journey to running this business and helping so many others in her community.

If you visit Guatemala this cooking class is an absolute must do.

Eco Hotel Uxlabil Atitlan

This was our lodging in San Juan La Laguna for several days. This is a quaint lake front eco hotel that is a bit of a walk from the rest of the town, so we ate many breakfasts and evening meals here. The local ladies that cook here are really nice and excellent cooks. The dining room had gorgeous lake view that made it even better

Breakfasts had Guatemalan and international options. Each breakfast included a beverage and a bowl of drinkable oatmeal topped with nuts. Most days we opted for the eggs, beans and tortillas.

For dinners we tried many of the soups and stews they offered, all of them were excellent. Some other items we tried were the marinated pork chop, vegetarian quinoa patties and tamalitos topped with salsa, avocado and cheese.

Honestly this is probably the most I have ever eaten at a hotel and the food was great each time.

Dao Thai

We arrived in Panajachel at Lake Atitlan today. Pana seems to have a very international food scene and we decided to try this place for dinner.

We started with sparkling lemonades which turned into a common drink for us on this trip. So refreshing.

Then we each ordered a noodle dish and got a veggie tofu dish to share.

The food was good, but nothing mind blowing. Coming from LA I am very spoiled w/ excellent Thai food.

However it was a good satisfying dinner on a major transit day. We spent a lot of the day in a truck and tomorrow we leave by boat across Lake Atitlan!

Taqueria El Sotano

So this was day 2 and we spent a long day touring Tikal which was absolutely amazing. We had planned on this taco spot which was near the place we would get dropped off.

It was a Saturday night and the place was packed. Nevertheless we were greeted and seated quickly upstairs overlooking the streets of Isla Flores.

Something interesting about Guatemala, they call tortilla chips nachos. They are usually very thick, very hard and crunchy. Like hard enough to crack a tooth! We shared an order of nachos and guacamole.

My sis got a frozen jamaica and I went for a michelada with Guatemalan beer of course. She ordered beef tacos and I got pork.

The tacos were good and the salsa game was strong,

It was a great dinner to end a great day.

Restaurante Maracuya

We picked this place for our first real meal in Guatemala. Flores Guatemala is hotttt and this lakeside restaurant had many shady patios full of flowers and vines to pick from. There was comfy tropical furniture and also there was a cat and a dog and iguanas wandering around the patios. So neat!

We started with icy fruity drinks and a guacamole to share. My sister got kale mango and mine was maracuya/passion fruit and it tasted like tropical heaven.

My sister ordered grilled beef that came with a half dozen little side dishes. It looked very good.

I ordered an item from my Guatemala hit list the jocon de gallina. This was a very earthy chicken stew. It was very good.

They had wonderful looking desserts here but we rarely save room for that.

I highly recommend you try this place if you are visiting Isla Flores.

Taco Madness 2026

Here is a look at every taco I tried at Taco Madness…

🟡Tacos Los Cholos -The rib eye taco. This was the priciest taco I had here, but worth it. It had a hefty slab of rib eye and really tasty sauces.

Taste 5/5 Spicy 3/5

🟡Evil Cooks -Man oh man do Evil Cooks bring it! Some special effects (human skulls and guillotines) and some real life carnage (the beef skulls full of succulent cabeza). I had to try everything offered by Evil Genius Chef Alex, both the green chorizo and cabeza. The cabeza here was my BEST TACO of the night!

Taste 5/5 Spicy 3/5

🟡Tacos y Birria La Unica -This birria has been on my hit list for a llllllong time. They were the one and only to pull their truck into the madness! So glad to finally try it. Solid quesataco and consome.

🟡Tacos El Toro -They were about to sell out and had run out of lengua, but I snagged a cabeza taco. It was small but packed full of meat and they hit me with habanero sauce. Very good.

🟡Villa’s Tacos 3 -so I have been eating at Villa’s 1&2 for years, but never made it to 3 for the new menu yet. This was the longest wait time, clocked in at over an hour. Vic keeps always keeps the mood up talkin to the line and pumping music. I got the pulpo taco. It was stunning.

Taste 5/5 Spicy 3/5

I was there 4.5 hours, had 6 tacos, and went home happy.
