Pt. 2. During the pandemic I transitioned to an administrative assistant; I’m also a customer service girl! I am gifted at delivering difficult news about students or policies that aren’t always favored. I’ve found that a little empathy and humor goes a long way.
My sudden chronic illness made the decision to leave for me. I could no longer be effective at my job and I had to choose myself. While these days are filled with doctor appointments and bedrest, I am grateful for the complete body of work that I compiled, the students and parents that I’ve impacted, and the amazing educators and administrators that I’ve met.
As I bid farewell to this chapter, I will never forget my family at Pickett. These are the people and students I looked forward to seeing daily. The staff and administrative support has been immeasurable! They made what is such a difficult challenge manageable when I was able to show up. The students noticed I was missing and inquired and checked in with me often. It is a culture and experience I will never forget.
There were way too many photos to post, but is a random selection!
So long, for now!

The Beginning of a New Chapter

Two weeks ago, I said goodbye to a career that I started when I was 19 years old. It was definitely bittersweet! I went to college for journalism, but got a summer job at the childcare/preschool where I worked nearly 30 years! I fell in love with watching and supporting the growth and development of young children. I was a natural teacher; I hadn’t even considered it! I changed my education course and got a degree in ECE. When I transitioned from that center, I was a center director for a year. In addition to managing True Way YEF and delivering workshops and inspirational talks, I took a job as a guest teacher. The change from young children to elementary through high school challenged my expectations and previous experiences to the max! It took a minute to get my footing, but soon I was one of the most requested guest teachers. Here are some things that worked for me. I learned to just be my corny self! Kids were both surprised and delighted when I would burst into the Seseme Street theme song, full voice! They appreciated reading out loud and being asked open-ended questions about their lessons, their educational experiences, who they were. I held the bar high for mutual respect. They also loved my yardstick, known as “the rod of correction!”

💔 UNCHAINED, BUT STILL IMPRISONED 💔
In this raw and heartfelt piece, Unchained Prisoner, E. Marie Lambert gives us an unfiltered look into the invisible world of caregiving. It’s not always angel wings and halos—sometimes it’s exhaustion, loneliness, and sacrifice wrapped in love and duty.

From caring for a disabled husband to navigating unreliable home health systems and emotional isolation, Lambert shares the complex journey of a caregiver who could walk away—but chooses not to. She reminds us that:

“Caregiving is simultaneously the most selfless and selfish act of humanity.”

Her words are a mirror for those who live this life, and a wake-up call for those who don’t. It’s a must-read for anyone who has loved deeply, sacrificed quietly, and questioned silently.

📖 Read the full article and take a moment to check on the caregivers in your life. A call, a meal, an errand—they make all the difference. Link in comments,

Life as a caregiver can be so unpredictable. While I had the best plans for a day out, my beloved was not having it. These times can be the hardest. What used to be so simple is often very complicated, takes an extreme amount of planning and timing, and oftentimes in the end, it doesn’t go as planned. So, instead of enjoying the beautiful outdoors, I will start my meal prep routine for the week! Happy Saturday!
