Please keep Reuben FastHorse in your prayers and thoughts.
It has been several weeks since I last posted an update on Reuben, and I want you all to know that he is doing much better and seems happy when I speak with him. HOWEVER, while he has left the hospital, he has been in a rehabilitation facility for the last few weeks.
Reuben is his same, old self, happy and talkative, but he has lost his memories, and the worst fear is that he may never regain them. Even he has attested to me that the most rustrating part of his life is his inability to find his missing memory. He knows they are there, but simply cannot attain them.
When I spoke with him on the phone the other day, he was very happy to hear my voice and had full recognition of who I was, but was unable to remember my name. This happens every time I speak with him, so I start every conversation with, "Hello, Reuben, Misu ('little brother' in Lakota)! This is your Chiae ('big brother' in Lakota), Scotty!" We always called each other ny these brotherly words.
He knows fully who I am and knows we have a long, 24-year history of friendship, but he is also aware that he cannot access those memories. He speaks without pause or hesitation, but he struggles to call up memories.
This, as I have said before, has to be extremely frustrating for him, as his main vocation in life was as a Native-American-Indigenous-Peoples language revivalist and historian. The sad part is that while he has wonderful coversations with me, he cannot remember any details about what he knows that he knows is locked away somewhere in his brain - hopefully not erased forever.
The hope is that with further rehabilitation and healing, he may regain those lost memories.
Susie is struggling. She is not only heartbroken, but she is struggling alone to maintain things financially while she, too, is going through continuing treatments for her own neurological issues brought on by her own head trauma.
So, I am here, again, to ask you to see what you are able to do to send a few bucks their way to help as they continue to work through these things. You can do this by clicking on the attached link.
I know that we ALL have our own kettles of fish to deal with, and money is ever-so-much-more tight during these frustrating polico-economic times, but if you can help Reuben and Susie, please do what you are able. If you cannot help financially, please share this post out of love for our friend.
Also know that every single penny of what is donated - save for the minuscule GFM fee - goes directly into Susie and Reuben's bank account.
To date, there has been $2288 donated, with $73.89 of that going to GoFundMe's fees. $2214.11 has been deposited in Reuben and Susie's bank account.
If you can help, please do. If you can share, please do.
Cheers.
Scotty Roberts
