My husband had another woman tattooed over his heart FOR 20 YEARS — he swore she was imaginary until I found her.
I first noticed the tattoo on our honeymoon.
A beautiful young woman stared up from Richard’s chest.
She had dark eyes, delicate features, and a tiny rose tucked behind one ear.
“Who is she?” I asked.
Richard laughed and pulled me closer.
“Nobody, Evelyn. Just a face the tattoo artist invented when I was nineteen.”
I believed him.
For twenty years, I believed him.
I believed him through five failed fertility treatments.
Through every appointment.
Every disappointment.
Every month we told ourselves maybe next time would be different.
And I still believed him the morning we finally brought home our adopted baby girl, Claire.
Over the years, the tattoo became so familiar that eventually I stopped noticing it.
Until last month.
I was searching through Richard’s toolbox for an insurance document when I noticed one of the wooden panels inside the cabinet was loose.
I pulled it back.
Something was hidden underneath.
A yellowed photograph.
The second I saw the woman in it, my entire body went cold.
I recognized those eyes immediately.
I had been looking at them on my husband’s chest for two decades.
And behind her ear was the same tiny rose.
Exactly the same.
My hands started shaking.
Then I noticed what she was holding.
A newborn baby.
Wrapped in a blanket.
Not just any blanket.
Claire’s coming-home blanket.
The one we had wrapped around our daughter the day we brought her home.
I flipped the photograph over.
Six words were written across the back in Richard’s handwriting.
“Forgive me, Rose. She can’t know.”
My knees hit the garage floor.
For several minutes, I just sat there.
Who was Rose?
Why had Richard lied about her for twenty years?
And why was she holding our daughter?
I searched through everything hidden behind that panel.
Old receipts.
Business cards.
A small address book.
Near the back, I found one name.
Rose.
And beside it, an old phone number.
I called before I could talk myself out of it.
The phone rang four times.
Then an older woman answered.
“Hello?”
My throat tightened.
“Is this Rose?”
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Richard?”
My stomach twisted.
“Is that really you?”
I gripped the phone harder.
“This isn’t Richard.”
Another long pause.
“It’s his wife.”
I heard her inhale sharply.
Then she started crying.
Deep, broken sobs.
And finally she said:
“YOU FINALLY FOUND ME.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“I thought this day would never come.”
“Who are you?”
She didn’t answer.
“Why do I have a picture of you holding Claire?”
Nothing.
“What did Richard do?”
Rose cried harder.
Then she said:
“I can’t tell you over the phone.”
She gave me the address of a diner in the next town.
“Come alone.”
I didn’t wait for Richard to get home from work.
My hands shook so badly while I was driving that I missed the turn twice.
When I finally reached the diner, Rose was already sitting in the last booth near the window.
Silver hair.
Trembling fingers wrapped around a coffee cup.
But even after all those years, I recognized her immediately.
She was the woman tattooed over my husband’s heart.
I slid into the booth across from her.
“You’re Evelyn,” she said quietly.
“And you’re the woman on my husband’s chest.”
Her face crumpled.
I placed the photograph on the table between us.
“Start talking.”
Rose stared down at it.
Then at me.
Before she could answer, the bell above the diner door rang.
Her eyes suddenly moved past my shoulder.
All the color drained from her face.
I turned around.
Someone was walking directly toward our booth.
And when I saw WHO it was, I nearly fainted.
Because I recognized that face too.
