Clooney did not just write checks; he orchestratated the giveaway like a classic caper movie.
He drove an old, unmarked van with "Florist" signage to a secret, secure vault in downtown Los Angeles.
He loaded $14 million in cash (mostly in $20 bills) into 14 matching black Tumi suitcases.
He invited his 14 friends over for dinner and placed a suitcase at each of their designated seats.
When his friends opened the suitcases in absolute shock, Clooney shared his profound gratitude, noting that he wouldn't have a career without them. Knowing that a massive cash gift could trigger a heavy financial burden, Clooney also paid the gift taxes entirely out of his own pocket. This cost him an additional estimated $3.4 million so his friends could keep every single penny of their million dollars tax-free.
Among the friends were everyday people, including one who was working at airport security and commuting to work on a bicycle every day just to support his family. Clooney reportedly added an ultimatum to ensure no one felt too proud to accept the help: either everyone had to take their suitcase, or nobody got one. Needless to say, they all accepted!
