BUCHANAN – Westchester County residents are calling on Governor Hochul to put the brakes on bringing back nuclear power to Indian Point. Food and Water Watch, a nonprofit group that fights for sustainable food, clean water, and a livable climate, held an online rally late Thursday. About 100 concerned citizens joined the Zoom meeting, where speakers lashed out at Holtec International, which owns Indian Point and was paid $2.4 billion to decommission the power plant back in 2021.

KINGSTON – The appellate judges for the State Supreme Court have ruled in favor of the City of Kingston in the Pike Plan case. “We can now move forward with our demolition plans for the Pike Plan canopies in Uptown Kingston,” said Mayor Steven Noble. “With this decision, we will be issuing an RFP – one that was prepared in fall 2024, to find a contractor for the demolition of the canopies. We expect that demo will begin in winter 2026. All precautions will be made to create as little disruption as possible to the adjacent buildings and businesses. As we have stated many times, the Pike Plan canopies have come to the end of their useful life, and the safety of our residents is our utmost concern.”

NEWBURGH – It was last year when the federal government quietly closed the Newburgh Social Security Office and moved the operations some 25 miles away in the Town of Wallkill. On Monday afternoon, Congressman Pat Ryan (D, NY-18) rallied at the site of the former Newburgh facility with a number of local officials, clergy and others to call for an office to be re-established in eastern Orange County.

KINGSTON – Short-term rentals of apartments and houses create a challenge for residents who live in a community. On the one hand, they bring in tourists and their wallets, but on the flip side, they take away from the inventory for permanent residents. In Ulster County, those short-term rentals comprise over three percent of total housing stock, exceeding the two percent cap recommended by the county’s Housing Smart Communities Initiative.
