With dreams of creating more equitable and diverse spaces on campus, Penn State College of the Liberal Arts student and Schreyer Scholar Carter Gangl, a junior majoring in Psychology with minors in Women’s Studies and Sexuality and Gender Studies, is working on expanding signage for gender-neutral bathrooms across all Penn State campuses and on an identity-based resource map with the hope of adding it to the Penn State interactive map sometime later this year.
“I want to make sure that students like myself know that there are people that care about them and that people are working for their benefit to make sure they feel included,” Carter said.
They also completed an internship with Dotdash Meredith, where they were able to establish a new dashboard revealing trends and progression in racial, ethnic, and gender diversity among company employees.

Endings are always difficult, but the moment is here, and I must say adiós.
Almost 25 years ago, I left my job at El Nuevo Herald, in Miami, to start working at a magazine called People en Español that few believed would succeed, including its editor back then. During my interview with him, he asked me a bit taken aback, how I was willing to leave my full-time job in the newspaper —with a recently bought home in South Florida too— for a project that he could only guarantee would last some five years.
At the end of the 90s, there were many Spanish language magazines in the United States: Vanidades, Cristina La Revista, Cosmopolitan en Español, TV y Novelas, TV y Notas, Mira Magazine, HOLA, among others. People en Español started small, printing 120,000 issues with a tiny editorial and sales team. During the last decade, all printed magazines began to disappear, all except People en Español.
As the magazine grew, the team remained the same. From the beginning a very small team continued to produce the magazine (which reached 6 million readers a month and had half a million subscribers), worked on events and our website (with 2 million users). We’ve suffered through administrative changes —first belonging to Time Warner, then Time Inc became a public company, followed by our sale to Meredith Corp and now Dotdash Meredith, a tech company.
Even as the printed magazine will no longer exist, I believe in the future of the brand, in its audience and the power of Latinos in the United States. People en Español magazine may have reached its end, but its website continues, and I’m convinced that with the excellent staff that we’ve created since its beginnings, it will continue to produce the best entertainment content in the world and will continue to add users.
The respect of our readers and users, of the celebrities we’ve covered, the trust they’ve always had in us, is something I value and will continue to value.
For years I’ve worked day and night, Mondays to Sundays, producing with my team the best content possible. Now, I will follow you as a spectator.
You know that in the last few years, I’ve also been developing my career as a writer. I’ve published two novels, the third will come out in January 2023. I’ve sold three more books I must finish writing in the coming years. So now it’s time to become a full-time writer, one of my lifelong dreams I thought I would have to put off for a few more years, but no more.
To everyone who worked with me, those who began at People en Español and went on to have careers in other companies and to all the team that remains that has been like a family to me, my deepest gratitude.
Goodbye,
A
A
This year has been full of big stories. This week, we continue our top 10 list with some of our favorites. Alden Global Capital completes its aggressive acquisition of Tribune Publishing Company and attempts a hostile takeover of Lee Enterprises; Discovery Inc announces a merger with AT&T’s WarnerMedia; and Twitter makes several acquisitions while testing new subscription products.
Also, the Federal Trade Commission cracks down on subscription companies who use sketchy tactics, and Meredith Corp. is no more, at least not in its previous form. The broadcast side of the house was acquired by Gray TV, while Meredith’s publishing arm was absorbed by IAC’s Dotdash, creating Dotdash Meredith, the largest publisher in the U.S. What are your favorite subscription stories of 2021?
