These photos were taken during our high school senior trip to Alanya, Antalya, in late spring 1987. Our teachers were with us the entire time, and it was actually a very structured and disciplined school trip. The group was much larger overall; these are simply a few classmates in the photos.

Everyone's memories are valuable to them. Though perhaps not for everyone — many people want to forget their past, but I'm not one of them. My memories are valuable to me too.

During middle school (1980–1983), I was publishing the school newspaper for a period of time. Together with a few friends, we conducted interviews with journalists and writers from two of the most important newspapers of that era for the school paper.

Years later, I also worked for one of those newspapers, within Hürriyet, as an editor and content manager.

We interviewed Hasan Pulur and cartoonist Nehar Tüblek from Hürriyet, and Nadir Nadi (the son of Cumhuriyet founder Yunus Nadi) and Oktay Akbal from Cumhuriyet.

If I called out from the roads of Aşiyan, would you hear me?

In the final weeks of high school, we skipped school one day and went to the for a picnic with a big group of classmates. We visited the grave of poet Orhan Veli Kanık and spent the whole day at Park, enjoying the Bosphorus air. — May 1987

There was a time during my university years when I spent quite a bit of time at the Ibrahim Pasha Palace.

It was my favorite place in Sultanahmet. I even got my friends used to it, we would often meet there. In spring, the courtyard and garden were incredibly beautiful. In winter, sitting inside and watching the snow fall into the courtyard, it was history, coffee, tea, and long conversations.

Once or twice a year, we would also visit the exhibitions, both the permanent collection and any new ones that arrived. Today, the palace is home to the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, it was the same back then. The entrance courtyard was used as a café, and from spring until mid June, during the academic season, we would sit in the garden for hours, drinking coffee, studying, or simply spending time.

There was a slightly elevated garden, with trees, flowers, and a peaceful view over Sultanahmet Square. You could watch the constant flow of visitors, tourists, and life, all within a deeply historical atmosphere.

I still remember seeing some of the earliest known Turkish carpets there, in one of the exhibitions.

For anyone who loves Istanbul and history, this place is truly special.

The Sultanahmet area itself, including the Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar, Cağaloğlu, Eminönü, and the historic peninsula, is one of the best places to feel history, not just see it.

And there's something else I always think about.

Palaces like this, once home to powerful figures who shaped history, eventually become places where young students sit, drink coffee, and talk about life.

So many sultans, so many pashas came and went.
They built palaces, mansions, entire worlds.

None of them could take any of it with them.

Hürriyet reklamı gibi fotoğraf; renkleri çok güzel, tasasız güzel bir yaz günü, plajdan gelinmiş muhtemelen de.

-—People on social media mostly care about NOW. That'’ probably why stories have gained more attention than posts in recent years. People don'’ really focus on the past or the future, they'’e curious about the present. What are you doing right now?

So I'’ sharing these old photos mainly for myself. If others enjoy them too, that'’ fine, but my intention is personal. I'’ not always nostalgic, but I hadn'’ looked at many of these photos for a long time, so this feels meaningful to me.

I don'’ know how long social media will last, or how long we will, but for now, while we’re here, I want these memories to stay in my gallery.

This photo was taken during a trip we took in the summer of 1988, which covered several cities in .

We were invited to dinner by old friends of our family, a well known family in the town. It was a very old, traditional mansion. A small stream flowed through the garden, which was the first time I had seen something like that, and I found it very charming.

So this photo is a memory from that beautiful traditional mansion. If I remember correctly, it was in the center of .

The last one is the original photo, and the other two are AI restorations. It was already in decent shape, but needed a bit of fixing because the mobile scan was not high resolution. I used both (second photo) and Google (first photo). ChatGPT gave richer, stronger colors, which I prefer, while Gemini did a better job on faces and did not distort them much while improving the resolution.

This was taken at a regular family dinner, or maybe a family birthday, in June 1985, with my two cousins, my maternal aunt, and my grandmother.
—
Among the women in my extended family, including my father’s side, my maternal grandmother was perhaps the luckiest. She was a woman like Rose Kennedy.

After World War I, however they arranged it, she and my grandfather were brought together and married at a very young age. My grandfather came from a small village to the big city, Istanbul, in the mid-1960s. He became a highly successful businessman in a relatively short time. He never cheated on her, never left her, and never showed her any disrespect. Their relationship reflected the style of that era, with a certain distance, but it was always built on respect and care. My grandmother was always treated with great regard.

She had five children, though one passed away at a young age, as was not uncommon in those times. Aside from her childhood and early youth, shaped by the conditions of war, she lived a comfortable life. Until the end of her life, she was surrounded by her children, and other than Type 1 diabetes, she did not experience serious illness.

So she did not have to face life’s hardships alone or endure a bad husband, something that has made many women’s lives miserable.
