‘Think about New York and the word "serene" doesn't naturally spring to mind. Energetic, exciting, stimulating to the point of frenzy: yes. Tranquil, calm, and almost meditatively harmonious?
Surely some mistake there. Simon Upton has an unrivaled ability to bring elegance to the rooms he photographs without losing any of their intensity or dynamism.
Accordingly here are some of Manhattan's most gloriously personal spaces captured in their myriad finery, yet distilled with quiet, understated beauty. It's as if he's caught the city that never sleeps as it emerges from a restorative moment of shut-eye: calm, poised and ready for its close-up.’

This striking house designed and decorated by Peter Pennoyer Architects in Hunting Valley, Ohio will ultimately be bequeathed to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Inspired by Czech Cubism – an ephemeral early twentieth century movement notable for its exploration of prismatic forms – it is a house of tremendous complexity ruled by a calm mastery of the language of this style.
Join Peter Pennoyer for the next in-person installment of the ICAA Book Club on January 26th, 2022 for an exploration of the new book, “ROWDY MEADOW: House – Land – Art” published by Vendome Press, which documents this visionary house, and learn about the challenges and rewards of designing a house that, room by room, engages with an extraordinary collection of twentieth-century furniture and decorative arts, and a significant contemporary art collection. This event has now been moved online, and is free and open to ICAA Members only!
