“People sometimes perceive me as a strange creature,” says Stefan. “I can see it in their faces when they visit. It’s like they are thinking ‘I would never be able to live here,’ but they can’t deny its uniqueness. Walking around this home is like getting inside one of my works. Our place has its own language, its own DNA.”

"Antonio Ligabue (1899–1965) Head of a Tiger, 1957, Oil on masonite
Masone Labyrinth, Franco Maria Ricci Collection

Ligabue was born in Switzerland and led an erratic childhood and adolescence marked by economic, physical, and mental hardship that resulted in frequent stays in psychiatric hospitals. He created this work during the most prolific period of his career, which was characterized by a bright, audacious palette, an Expressionist use of color, and the pronounced dark outlines of foregrounded figures."

“I am reminded of the power of purple in my everyday life, from the rich plum jam I spread on my morning toast, to the deep purple anemones bathed in sunlight in my garden, to the amethyst geode on my desk. I try to use touches of this magnificent color in my design work, whether in lavender throw pillows, rooms painted in delicate shades of mauve and cream, or tribal carpets woven from natural fibers dyed with mallow and elderberry."

"Harperley Hall is one of the very rare Arts and Crafts buildings to survive on New York City’s Upper West Side. The early eighteenthcentury portrait above the fireplace is what I like to call a conversation starter: Lord Cornbury, Queen Anne’s governor of New York and New Jersey, and a scandalous cross-dresser. The huge terracotta pots are from the legendary Amy Perlin."

"On one of the dusty dirt roads linking Noto to Ragusa, where fields of almond
trees and small agricultural enterprises seem untouched by time, a narrow driveway
leads to Mandara Vecchia. The journey is marked by ancient drystone walls, cut
and stacked with precision, guiding visitors to the masseria. Even before reaching
the entrance, the landscape reveals its layered richness as spires of giant agave the
color of oxidized copper pierce the silver-flecked foliage of centuries-old olive trees.
Just beyond, an emerald expanse of manicured lawn unfurls like a moat around
the masseria, an unexpected oasis in the parched Sicilian terrain."

“Victoria Durrer-Gasse, founder of La Galeria Elefante Ibiza, and her French husband, immunization pioneer François Gasse, moved to Ibiza from France in the 1990s. They lived all over the island—even on a boat—until they fell under the spell of this authentic property, untouched by what Victoria calls the “Miamification” of some Ibizan renovations.”

"Being mistaken for dead architects is a compliment for any committed classical architect. In this instance, however, one person knew better— the Realtor. A family new to palm Beach had identified their favorite house on the island, a rambling, white, Bermuda-style home on a beachfront corner. They told their Realtor that they would hire the architects of that house if they were still alive. Luckily for us, we were."

"During the pandemic, I received a series of texts from my close personal friends of
more than twenty years, a European couple who split their time between Madrid and Mallorca. They told me they were planning to buy a house in the Hamptons, where they had been coming for many summers as guests. “This is it,” they said, sharing a link to the listing. What did I think? Would I go see it? Of course I would."

“Although, O'Neill grew up in Manhattan, he spent part of his childhood traveling with his parents, who were archaeologists and anthropologists—a circumstance that helped pave his future artistic path. “We lived in tents on the banks of the Missouri River in South Dakota. There were no other kids to play with, so I would sit under a big tree and watch bugs and collect them in a jar to study. When I was twelve, we lived in Trinidad in the West Indies. Free time found me dreaming in the mango groves and collecting giant, iridescent-blue butterflies. This is how I got the ‘collecting bug,’ which is what photographers have: they take pictures and collect images.”

“When I am engrossed in the peace of my home, I’m not aware of how much the island has changed. The north is still very authentic—the nature is breathtaking. You just need to stay put with old friends who share your love for the essence of the island until the noise departs and the silence returns.”

"Bugatti Type 35B Sport, US Coachwork, 1927 Mulhouse, Musée National de l’Automobile
The two-seater is considered to be the car that marked a “turning point,” pioneering the concept of a holistically conceived, race-ready car available for purchase. This extraordinarily successful car won more than 1,000 races in its time."
