"It’s a matchbox of a house — a quintessential Aspen postcard, but one that tells only a small part of the story these days. It’s a short walk in one direction to the Aspen Music Festival in its parklike arroyo and to the ski slopes in the other. The lifts fan up from “downtown” — a bustling hub of hotels, scores of prodigal shops and restaurants, and a few “regular” ones too. Aspen is no longer the mining town this little house might suggest, but everyone already knows that."

"Karlyn Neel, who first attended Modernism Week in 2019, decided to pursue the dream before she’d even returned to her residence in the Bay Area. Scrolling through the Palm Springs listings on Trulia, she came across a sleek William Cody–designed home overlooking Eisenhower Mountain in Indian Wells. A month later it was hers. The three-bedroom house was built in 1961 for Fillmore Crank, the developer who worked with Cody on Desert Bel Air Estates, the subdivision where it’s located, and his wife, actress Beverly Garland, aka the stepmom in My Three Sons.”

"Children and play are a recurring motif in the universal world of art. They are, of course, strangely adult when the time comes for their close-up, seemingly the less childish the further back in time the depiction. Perhaps that’s because children faced such a harrowing path in those darker days, or perhaps because we overlay our own anxieties in these darker days. As the writer G. K. Chesterton put it: “Fairy tales do not tell children that dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.” "

"A familiar Vero Beach band was reunited for this project, with Sam Comer and Moor Baker
teaming up on the landscaping, and Ashley Waddell and Courtney Harris of Olivia O’Bryan designing the interiors, as they had for this family many times before. We all leaned hard into dramatic simplicity, the silver lining of a modest budget, skillfully executed by our friends at Indian River Masonry."

"I was keen that hand-embroidery should also come forward in the design of some of the guest bedrooms– the lily of the valley room (another of my favourite flowers because of its association with spring’s renewal, good fortune and the French tradition of offering posies of muguet to loved ones on May 1st) celebrates the delicate drooping blossom through handembroidered fabrics on the bed linens, curtains, blind and upholstery."

"Palazzo Biscari, the most important private Baroque palace in Catania, was built after the devastating earthquake of 1693 that reshaped the city. Ignazio Paternò Castello, the 3rd Prince of Biscari, was granted permission by the Duke of Camastra, who led the city’s reconstruction efforts, to build the palazzo on a section of Catania’s sixteenth-century walls. What emerged, completed by his son and grandson over decades, is a masterpiece of Baroque and Rococo architecture."

"Ironically, this house is modest compared to other new houses sprouting up in Highland Park (Dallas’s fanciest ’hood), but it took some doing to get it that way. Our layout was arrived at only after winnowing out several larger, even more complex schemes. The clients’ wish list was really long. The architect, the decorator, and the clients’ good sense eventually prevailed, resulting in a reasonably sized house suitable for a pair of grown-ups and an occasional visiting son, daughter, or grandchild."

"It's the middle of March, and Blixseth Mountain in Rancho Mirage is dusted with snow. “Borrowing the view” in the Japanese manner, the path that winds through boulders and palm trees in Jean-Claude Huon’s garden appears to lead all the way to the hills. “This is a place where people come to be without other problems,” observes the designer, and although he’s referring to the desert in general, the description seems particularly apposite to his corner of it.”

"Wood: Inlays in the Studiolo of Federico da Montefeltro Urbino, Palazzo Ducale, Piano Nobile.
This small study, the most complete example of the genre to survive from the early Renaissance, is decorated, in its lower register, largely with depictions of library cabinets standing ajar; inside them, it is possible to see books and other objects."
