Lessons from France…
“Hymne à l'amour”
- Who is annoyed by French pompous-ness? Me. (‘pompeux’, even the word etymologically has French roots: ‘full of grandeur’...)
- Who abhors French duck pate and slowly killing animals? Me.
- Who detests their moldy cheeses? (Not) me!
- Who thinks (French) Existentialism sucks? (me! - when I did not know it enough to judge properly- but it still sucks!)
- Who finds the absence of air-conditioning in Paris’ subways, general people’s stinginess and their “trivial sense of every day’s realism” annoyingly petty and stifling? Me.
- While dictating unrealistically high fees with trinkets, luggage and perfumes, for vogue? Uhh La,La... Me!
Now …
Each of us, within 24 hrs will put food in our mouths, go to the bathroom at least once and dive into a sweet unconscious embrace of sleep- heavy bodily constraints and necessities defining our (relatively) insignificant existences.
And, that’s why we (mostly all) love high tech, and, the higher the tech- the better. It liberates us. Delivers and promises comfort, pleasure, prestige, superiority over limitations, maybe transcendence…
And did France on this occasion, match the technologically-artistically superior and dazzling Chinese Olympic Opening or even the elegantly formidable British Olympic Opening ceremonies?
Well, actually… France did not even try. They just said: we are gonna be humans for humans. We’ll just have a show.
We will sing about Love.
And Loss.
And about humans.
And Celine Dion sang.
And I cried…
…………….,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,……………
France, again, with Celine’s divine voice in Edith Piaf’s immortal song “Hymne à l'amour”, reminded us about our (small) frame and what’s important within those limits: authenticity!
And the ability to: Love! (And be loved in return!)
To be genuine to one’s self in expression, within the bounds of our limitations- while emanating mammalian warmth and while never forgetting who we are: love thirsty and love giving curious creative creatures- limited in flesh- yet grand in vision, beautiful and simple humans.
So then…
Viva La France!
Liberté, égalité, fraternité!
Vive l'amour!
