VPAC urges Opposition to bring meaningful reforms on GECOM, Mining Industry, & Luxury-Vehicle Taxes
VPAC is calling on the parliamentary opposition to table a unified package aimed at the comprehensive national reforms focused on transparency, fairness, and restoring opportunities for ordinary Guyanese. While VPAC is part of the Forward Guyana Movement coalition, it cannot table motions or Bills directly; therefore, we are publicly inviting the opposition, beginning with Member of Parliament, Amanza Walton-Desir as the coalition’s current parliamentary representative, to bring effect to these motions and complementary suite of legislative amendments before the National Assembly. If she chooses not to act, VPAC encourages the wider opposition to step forward in the national interest.
The first, addresses Guyana’s luxury-vehicle tax and concession loopholes, which currently favour only a small, well-connected elite while the State loses billions. The reforms aim to introduce a transparent luxury-vehicle tax, bans nominee imports, requires public disclosure of beneficial ownership, and ensures that every Guyanese has a fair chance to own a luxury vehicle, while the State finally earns revenue instead of receiving nothing.
The second, aims to restore fair access to mining lands for Guyanese miners. For too long, small and alluvial miners have been locked out while foreign operators receive prime lands and generous tax breaks, concessions created decades ago when Guyana was a poor country. The proposed reform prioritizes access for Guyanese, protects local livelihoods, and ends outdated tax giveaways to foreign operators that disadvantage our own people.
The third aspect proposes a restructuring of GECOM’s insulated and isolated power, establishing a more accountable, transparent, and balanced system that serves the nation—not political interests.
These measures are fully drafted, ready to be tabled, and designed to advance unity, fairness, and national development. VPAC remains committed to responsible collaboration and to strengthening the opposition through truth and accountability. This is not about blame or competition; it is about ensuring that Parliament addresses the issues that matter most to the Guyanese people.
Guyana deserves a united opposition that acts with purpose. VPAC stands ready to support any member willing to rise to this responsibility.
