The last stretch on this channel has been the leftover record. Episode 70: monumental buildings with almost no original sanitation. Episode 71: vacant ceremonial streets, painted skies, staged Civil War plates. Episode 72: raised grades, mud, and the clustered fires after which official dates get rewritten. Last night, Episode 73: Chris Kelly of Old World Exploration — city files, demolition dates, courthouses that vanish after a short life on the books.

Episode 73 – Old World Exploration with Chris Kelly

Tonight Jacob sits down with Chris Kelly of Old World Exploration city-by-city surveys of surviving and destroyed architecture, official construction dates that cannot account for the fabric, and civic buildings that disappear from the landscape after a brief documented life.
Chris has spent years assembling North American and overseas streetscapes: San Francisco, Brooklyn, Johannesburg, Madrid, Helena, Indianapolis, and more than a hundred other files. Three volumes on demolished buildings in Old World North America. A separate study of lost courthouses. Recently he has been examining asylums and orphan trains as institutions that appear in the same period as the rebuild narratives.
We will set his plates beside the last few programs on this channel: the absence of original sanitation in monumental buildings, vacant ceremonial streets and retouched skies, staged photographs, buried ground floors and raised grades, and the clustered urban fires after which official chronologies are reset.
History needs to be investigated — not taken at face value.
