The number of U.S. hotel construction projects in the development pipeline at the end of the second quarter was about 9 percent higher than one year prior, according to a new report from Lodging Econometrics. While the company expects growth to continue due to developers' pent-up demand, elevated costs for materials and supply chain issues could slow its pace, according to the report.

The total second-quarter U.S. hotel construction pipeline stood at 5,220 projects, up 9 percent year over year, representing about 621,000 rooms, up 4 percent. Projects in the early planning stages of development were up 26 percent to nearly 2,250—a record high, according to Lodging Econometrics

United Airlines beginning this fall will extend three of its Corporate Preferred loyalty program benefits to select corporate customers across its joint venture with Air Canada and Lufthansa Group, the carriers announced Sunday at the Global Business Travel Association in San Diego.

The three benefits are preferred boarding, preferred reaccommodation in the event of a service disruption, and preferred flight protection in the event of an equipment change or an overbooking situation, United VP of sales strategy and effectiveness Glenn Hollister said.

Small and midsize enterprises may have led the recovery of business travel from the depths of the pandemic, but their confidence in the overall economy and their individual businesses will dictate whether that rebound will accelerate, stagnate or even reverse. But while their economic projection has soured notably in recent months, they generally remain confident in projecting higher revenue for their own companies.

Delta Air Lines plans to offer daily direct service between New York-JFK and Berlin Brandenburg Airport beginning in May 2023, the carrier confirmed. It would operate the route with a Boeing 767-300 aircraft.

The carrier previously had "launched and terminated multiple times" New York-Berlin service, according to Simple Flying. The most recent launch was in 2017 between JFK and Berlin Tegel Airport, which was permanently closed in November 2020. Delta had removed the route, however, in 2019, according to the report.

Heathrow Adds Capacity Caps, European Airlines Restrict Sales | Business Travel News

London's Heathrow Airport has imposed daily capacity caps of 100,000 passengers through Sept. 11, Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye wrote in a statement, citing labor shortages among other challenges, asking airlines to "stop selling summer tickets to limit the impact on customers."

Passengers at Heathrow have been experiencing "unacceptable" service with long waiting times, delays when requiring assistance, missing or late bags, low punctuality and last-minute cancellations, Holland-Kaye wrote. "This is due to a combination of reduced arrivals punctuality as a result of delays at other airports and in European airspace and increased passenger numbers starting to exceed the combined capacity of airlines, airline ground handlers and the airport," he added.

TripActions CEO Ariel Cohen said the policy "paves the way to a strong recovery of business travel," noting that TripActions already had seen its bookings increase by 57 percent over the past three weeks.

"With the right health and safety measures in place, plus strong partnerships among policymakers, suppliers and corporate travel partners, the new rules should open the floodgates for worldwide economic recovery and bring much-needed business to airlines, hotels and destinations affected by the pandemic," Cohen said in a statement.
