Sotheby’s Science and Technology, or “sci-tech,” department is relatively new. It was founded by Cassandra Hatton in 2021 to take advantage of growing market demand for natural objects—which, these days, often means dinosaur fossils.

“Currently, the U.S. is one of the only countries where it’s legal to dig up dinosaur fossils on private land and sell them for profit,” Puck’s Julie Brener Davich explains. “It’s also a relatively new and low-volume market, without the sort of price discovery that typifies other categories…”

“Sam Altman, unlike Elon Musk, his former partner in OpenAI, has always had a chameleonic talent for telling people what they want to hear. And yet the subtext of what Altman was saying was unmistakable. His testimony grabbed the attention of at least two people: Senator Peter Welch—who said he couldn’t remember a time ‘when we’ve had companies come before us and plead with us to regulate them’—and me…”

Puck’s new A.I. correspondent, Ian Krietzberg, tells us what brought him into the world of A.I. reporting, and what his Puck Private Email “The Hidden Layer” will focus on.

Puck and The FLAG Art Foundation are proud to present “The Art of Influence,” a new art market summit on September 15th, which will bring together industry leaders like Dasha Zhukova Niarchos for a frank discussion about building a brighter future for the art world at this critical inflection point.

Raised in the U.S. by her mother, a Russian microbiologist, Dasha founded the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow in 2008. Since then, she has joined the boards of LACMA in Los Angeles, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Shed in New York where she lives.

Since 2019, Dasha has been the driving force behind Ray, a residential lifestyle brand that combines art and real estate with projects now open in Philadelphia and Harlem. Ray developments are underway in Phoenix, Arizona and Nashville, Tennessee. In addition to all of this, Zhukova is a noted collector of contemporary art.

Puck and The FLAG Art Foundation are proud to present “The Art of Influence,” a new art market summit on September 15th, which will bring together industry leaders and fine artists like Nicolas Party for a frank discussion about building a brighter future for the art world at this critical inflection point.

Known for his color-saturated paintings and murals of landscapes and still lifes, Party’s work is distinctive and immediately recognizable. Beginning in 2019, his work became widely sought after by collectors around the world, even sparking interest in painters who worked decades before him but seemed to share his affinity for stripped down landscapes. Along with strong support from collectors, Party has had museum and foundation shows in New York, Beijing, Brussels, Dallas and other European, Asian, and American cities.

Traffic is collapsing for publishers as the web reorients around A.I. The market is responding, too, with U.S. advertisers expected to spend over $25 billion, or about 14 percent of their search budgets, on A.I.-powered search by 2029.

The good news is that people are making and consuming more media than ever—even if the business itself becomes unrecognizable.

No matter how you feel about wearing flip-flops on the street, they are the shoe of the summer, with Google trends data suggesting that searches for the style are higher this year than in the three previous seasons.

“Searches for flip-flops have increased by triple digits from last year, according to Lyst. I blame The Row’s $690 Dune flip-flop…” writes Puck’s retail expert, Sarah Shapiro.

Puck founding partner Julia Ioffe’s first book, Motherland, comes out October 21st.

Part memoir, part journalistic exploration, part history, Motherland paints a portrait of modern Russia through the women who shaped it. With deep emotion, Julia shows what it means to live through the cataclysms of revolution, war, idealism, and heartbreak—and reveals how the story of Russia today is inextricably tied to the history of its women.

Be sure to preorder Motherland, and read Julia’s reporting in Puck’s Washington newsletter, The Best & The Brightest, while you wait for its release.

“A lot has been written about the overt sexuality of artist Lisa Yuskavage’s bubble gum–colored paintings of female figures with voluptuous breasts and cherubic faces—much of it negative, accusing her of being a pornographer and a ‘bad feminist,’” writes Puck’s Julie Brener Davich.

Yet, the Morgan Library & Museum doesn’t shy away from the controversy in its current exhibition of her work, even quoting some of her critics in the wall text...

Now selling like hotcakes at Saks Fifth Avenue: ringside seats to a creditor-on-creditor cage match.

“You may have seen Saks Global’s announcement that it was able to raise a fresh $600 million from its existing bondholders, many of the very same people who have suffered a 65 percent loss on bonds they bought just last December,” writes Puck’s Wall Street expert, William D. Cohan.

“And you may have asked yourself: Why in the world would anyone who has already lost 65 percent of their money owning part of a $2.2 billion bond, used to finance Saks’s purchase of Neiman Marcus Group, want to put up more money to rescue Saks Global from its dire financial predicament? Why throw good money after bad?”
