Before he ruled Russia, Vladimir Putin ruled his marriage.

In Julia Ioffe’s 'Motherland, a feminist history of modern Russia,' Lyudmila Putin’s story unfolds as both a love affair and a warning—a study in control, silence, and the making of an autocrat.

The A.I. boom is powered by chips, data—and an astonishing amount of water.

After months of FOIA requests, one small town in Washington finally revealed what the industry wouldn’t: its data centers, including Microsoft, Vantage, and BlackRock-owned CyrusOne, consumed more than 540 million gallons of water in just two years.

In Quincy, that’s about 12% of the city’s total water supply. Nationwide, two-thirds of new data centers are being built in water-stressed regions.

The future of A.I. isn’t just about computing—it’s also about resources.

She started on the sales floor. Now she’s calling the shots.

For months, Ulta chased an exclusive deal with Mikayla Nogueira’s viral skincare line, Point of View. But insiders say Sephora may have won the battle instead.

The offers were nearly identical, but the deciding factor wasn’t money — it was merchandising. Sephora’s betting that Mikayla’s outsider appeal, as a self-taught artist with 17 million followers, can stand next to pros like Mario and Vanngo. Ulta, meanwhile, is left wondering how they might have lost one of their own.

Sotheby’s Science and Technology, or “sci-tech,” department is relatively new. It was founded by Cassandra Hatton in 2021 to take advantage of growing market demand for natural objects—which, these days, often means dinosaur fossils.

“Currently, the U.S. is one of the only countries where it’s legal to dig up dinosaur fossils on private land and sell them for profit,” Puck’s Julie Brener Davich explains. “It’s also a relatively new and low-volume market, without the sort of price discovery that typifies other categories…”

“Sam Altman, unlike Elon Musk, his former partner in OpenAI, has always had a chameleonic talent for telling people what they want to hear. And yet the subtext of what Altman was saying was unmistakable. His testimony grabbed the attention of at least two people: Senator Peter Welch—who said he couldn’t remember a time ‘when we’ve had companies come before us and plead with us to regulate them’—and me…”
