Magari io desiderassi ogni giorno
I bei desideri che brillano intorno
A tutti i miei simili e tutti miei cari
E con loro dicessi... MAGARI!
If only my wish could be for each day
To gather all wishes in twinkling array
And grant them to everyone, stranger or kin
All of us chanting... IMAGINE!

E qui, per la curiosità dei prof di inglese, tutte le altre strofe con testo a fronte.

Hello, friends! Our book today is CAT & DOG: A TALE OF OPPOSITES by Tullio Corda, a simple and entertaining story of a pair of feisty frenemies.
Told by combining single- or double-word opposite pairs with illustrations, the reader follows the red cat and blue dog through a day of misadventures, primarily fueled by the cat’s sneaky and mischievous actions and the sweet yet d***y dog’s reactions. Readers can explore opposites such as above/below, quiet/loud, soft/hard, and so on, as the cat and dog stumble through a series of antics and interactions.
Simple and cute. While the concept is fairly basic and the story not particularly noteworthy, this translated import still has a good amount going for it. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and full of inoffensive, child-friendly visual humor that made JJ smile. And for beginning-readers, the simplicity of the words used to convey the opposite pairs is a plus - JJ was able to read nearly the entire book on her own, with only a few corrections on longer words like “unconcerned”. It’s a quick title that would make for a brief read, but for kids learning their opposites or beginning to read by themselves, this could be a nice easy read to help build confidence. Overall, it’s not a bad little book; nothing groundbreaking, but a well-constructed update on some classical literacy-comprehension themes, and worth a look. All in all, Baby Bookworm approved!

Hello, friends! Our book today is ROBIN ROBIN, written by Dan Ojari and Mikey Please, and illustrated by Briony May Smith, an adorable picture book retelling of the new holiday Netflix special of the same name.
When little Robin’s egg is found by a family of mice, they decide to raise the little bird as a part of their family. Robin loves her parents and siblings, and tries everything she can to be an excellent mouse, especially when the family ventures into the “Who-man” house to stealthily search for crumbs. Unfortunately, Robin isn’t particularly skilled at being stealthy, and the family nearly gets caught by a ferocious cat. Feeling out-of-sorts about the incident, Robin tries once more to be a sneaky as a mouse, a choice that will lead her on an adventure of discovery - about “Chrim-Cross” stars, about a clever collector magpie friend, and most importantly, about herself.
A lovely tale of blended family and self-identity. Robin eventually learns how to embrace her strengths as a bird to help her magpie pal and her beloved mouse family achieve their dreams; it’s a satisfying and affirming outcome, and a lovely message for readers who may themselves feel out of place or stuck between two worlds. The text features some fun repetitive lines that make the story entertaining to read aloud, and the rich artwork has a nice blended of traditional and modern storybook aesthetics. The length is fine for a storytime, and JJ really liked this one - so much so that she wanted to watch the special afterward. Overall, a sweet holiday treat that is light on the Christmas but heavy on themes of familial love and self-acceptance, and we loved. Baby Bookworm approved!

Hello, friends! Our book today is MISTER FAIRY, written by Morgane de Cadier, illustrated by Florian Pigé, and translated by Angus Yuen-Killick, an adorably sweet story about finding oneself.
The forest is full of fairies, each with their own special, magical talent. All, except, for Mister Fairy. He lacks the energy to be a morning fairy, fails at inspiring romance between forest critters, and creates disastrous confusion when he tries his hand at healing. Feeling useless and unhappy, Mister Fairy decides to leave the forest, discovering a “very different” kind of forest in the process, one filled with tall gray buildings and grim, gloomy people. Seeing that the denizens of the city feel as hopeless and sad as he does, he makes an attempt at brightening their day - and succeeds. In fact, with each new success at making the city folk happy, his confidence grows. Beginning to miss his home and friends, he decides to return to the forest, only to find an inspiring surprise upon his return.
Charming. A well-paced story with a gentle and uplifting plot mix beautifully with adorable, expressive illustrations that perfectly convey the book’s tone. Particularly satisfying was not only Mister Fairy gaining confidence in his talents, but the reveal that the forest had been benefitting from them all along, even without his knowledge; it shows that even when we are unsure of ourselves, we can still, often unconsciously, be making a positive impact on others’ lives. The artwork expresses each spread’s changing moods perfectly through shifts in color and light in way that is affecting yet understated; especially enjoyable are the Klassen-esque woodland creatures and fairies. The length is perfect for storytime, and JJ and I both throughly enjoyed this one. A delightful and encouraging tale, and it’s Baby Bookworm approved!

Hello, friends! Our book today BEFORE WE SLEEP by Giorgio Volpe and Paolo Proietti (Pallo Illustrations), a soft and sweet tale of fall friendship.
Little Red the fox is excited for the change of seasons that brings fall - it means autumn colors to hide in and crunchy leaves to play with. The only thing that makes the fall even more fun is the time spent with Red’s best friend, Hazel the dormouse. The pair spend a marvelous fall frolicking and playing hide-and-seek. Yet as the air grows colder, Little Red begins to fret; soon winter will be here, and Hazel will go into hibernation, leaving Red all along until spring. Trying to think of ways to keep Hazel from hibernating, Red resorts to asking if Hazel will try to stay awake this year, but the dormouse gently replies that when spring has come again, they will be back together. Until then, they can enjoy the time they have by appreciating their best friend.
Very sweet. This Italian import explores themes of friendship, even through separation, in a gentle, tender, yet surprisingly honest fashion. And while the ending feels a little abrupt, it does leave the reader with the implication that even while Hazel hibernates, Red will be okay, if a little lonely, until spring. The text, with translation by Angus Yuen-Killick is filled with language that paints a beautiful autumnal story, and cleverly and subtly chooses not to gender either of the main characters. The soft, smoky lines of the pencil art is cozy yet moody, and captures the tone perfectly. The length is perfect for a storytime, and JJ enjoyed it, even if she also felt the ending was a little unexpected. This is a different kind of tale, but one no less meaningful for it, and we liked it. Baby Bookworm approved!

Hello, friends! Our book today is THE SECRET OF THE MAGIC PEARL, written by Elisa Sabatinelli and illustrated by Iacopo Bruno, a stunning chapter book about courage, family, and the sea.
Young Hector lives in a small seaside town in Italy, one that is not particularly noteworthy to the outside world, but to Hector, is the most beautiful in the world. His dream is to become a deep sea diver like his father and grandfather before him, but his dream is interrupted by Amedeo Limonta (“the bad guy in this story”) building the tourist destination Rivadoro nearby and putting the marina where his family operate their tours out of business. Hector knows Limonta seeks a fabled pearl - the purest in the world - and he plans to find the pearl first and discover its secrets. Along the way, he and the other characters will discover more secrets as well: of family, of community, and of the living sea.
Spellbinding. Sabatinelli creates an energetic and guileless voice in Hector, as he describes the settings and unique characters surrounding him with beautiful, evocative language; readers are transported to windswept coastal Italy, witness to small town shenanigans and stormy sea journeys with the turn of each page. Bruno’s illustrations are equally immersive, seamlessly weaving through the chapters with spreads and margin artwork that is sometimes educational, sometimes comical, and always captivating. This chapter book is best for elementary-age and older bookworms, but can easily be read aloud in sections; JJ adored the story, even if it took us a few days to cover it entirely. Overall, this is a longer read that it utterly worth it, and we definitely recommend it. Baby Bookworm approved!
