The Black Seminoles, known as Los Negros Mascogos in Mexico, settled in Nacimiento de Los Negros, Mexico, in 1849. Descended from enslaved African American who escaped to Florida before making their way further south, the community celebrates Juneteenth every year but have always known the day as El Baile de Los Negros or El Día de Los Negros.
Radar 2022 spoke with Ashley Rodriguez, Corina Torralba, and Dina Rodriguez, descendants of Los Negros Mascogos, who are dedicated to preserving the history and traditions of their ancestors.
