This is not a pretty picture. Every night when I come home from work, arriving at a deserted subway station, I see this soul standing in front of the same MetroCard machine. Normally, I'm returning around 1am or later. Last night it was just before midnight, and this person was there. In the same spot, with their bags in the same place. Looking, as always as if they are going through pocket change in slow motion.
.
And I wondered, how long is this person there every night? How many hours do they stand there doing whatever it is they are doing?
.
If you have seen my handful of subway images during this time, and you have not had a reason to take the subway (and you really shouldn't unless you are an essential worker), you will notice that the NYC #subway is a very strange place right now. I've never been afraid to ride the subway as an adult. I'm a native New Yorker and I've seen many iterations of the subway in my life. I've seen it really bad, and very (ok, kinda) good. But currently, it's a very creepy place. Even during the day. And honestly, I think even the criminals/predators have become wary.
.
And those marginalized, desperate people who often live in the shadows and use the transit system as safe haven during the night or bad weather, have begun to take over in ways they never felt safe doing before. The subway is currently a very different city from the one above ground where people take #covidwalks, sit socially distant on park lawns to sun themselves for vitamin D, or watch the sunset before sequestering themselves inside again.
.
In the subway, there is darkness, sadness and despair. It is not families going to the Mets game, or couples heading to a date, or kids laughing loudly with friends on the way to school.
.
Right now, the subway is the virus.
.

If you were wondering why Puerto Plata was trending on @twitter. This is today in #PuertoPlata. The mayor of that city in flagrant violation of social distancing rules welcomed a man carrying a cross who believes that by placing said cross in the sea that it will end the #coronavirus. This is SO Sad.

Uptown Love in the Time of #Coronavirus: Farewell Coogan’s

It does not get more Washington Heights than Coogan’s. More than just a bar, Coogan’s was a haven for this diverse, vibrant and hardworking community for over 35 years. It was an Irish bar that was also Dominican, Black, Jewish, Mexican and so forth. It was the Uptown version of Cheers.
This might sound corny or clichéd, but the truth is that when you were there, you were home. It is hard to describe the feeling you felt when you entered their doors. It is infinitely sad that we will never feel that way again.

Beyond the great food, or the strong drinks, Coogan’s was a place that made you feel good. Before Washington Heights became trendy, before gentrification came calling to wreak havoc, before you had chic places to eat and drink, there was Coogan’s. For many of us who grew up in Washington Heights, Coogan’s was our first bar.

Coogan’s opened its door in 1985 right at the beginning of the crack era that devastated Washington Heights and so many communities across the country. Even then, Coogan’s welcomed one and all. It was oasis of calm in a neighborhood in the throes of the crack epidemic. During the riots that rocked this neighborhood in the summer of 1992, Coogan’s was a bastion of neighborliness and unity.

Here we go again. It is more than despicable that these right wing crazies keep invoking Rosa Parks for their reckless endangerment of other people. This is nauseating.

This is Houston city council member Michael Kubosh explaining why he is at a restaurant open for dine-in service in flagrant violation of the Harris County's stay-at-home order:
.
"Sometimes civil disobedience is required to move things forward, and so that's why we remember Rosa Parks."

Uptown Love in the Time of Coronavirus: Clap Because You Care

By @led_black

Our lives have changed profoundly. We no longer venture outside except for necessities. The once lively Alto Manhattan is eerily and uncharacteristically quiet. When you do go out you can see the fear and despair in the eyes of your fellow New Yorkers. The gnawing uncertainty of what tomorrow will bring and the inability to meaningfully interact with one another is testing our collective sanity.

And then at 7 pm, at least for a spell, we are not alone. We are united and the clouds over this city briefly part and we can see a brighter day on the horizon. The eruption of joy and togetherness provide the sustenance we all need to survive the pandemic. We are truly all in this together.

Pa’Lante Siempre Pa’Lante!

iPads for patients

No one is allowed to visit the thousands of New Yorkers hospitalized with COVID-19.

Dr. Jenny Chang saw many patients admitted without cell phones, leaving them out of touch with those they need most.

Chang is a resident physician at Jacobi-Montefiore’s Emergency Room.

She and her team created a virtual visitation program. They are requesting donations of iPads so patients can contact their loved ones while in isolation.

“As providers, we cannot even begin to imagine the loneliness and fear these patients must feel or fathom the sorrow and helplessness of their families,” Chang said in a statement. “Due to the no-visitation policy, many critically ill and dying patients are unable to communicate or say a final farewell to their loved ones.”
